"Lore" is the nickname of the protagonist Hannalore (played by Saskia Rosendahl). The story takes place in Germany just before the end of World War II. Lore is a girl who has grown up in privilege; her father is a high-ranking SS officer who has executed many Jews and innocent civilians in Belarus. Lore and her sisters know little about the plight of the Jews; she is even a proud member of the Hitler Youth, filled with reverence for Nazi beliefs. Now, with Hitler dead and Germany reduced to ruins, Lore embarks on a painful and profound journey to adulthood. The film won four awards, including Best Film, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score at the 2012 Stockholm Film Festival. It also previously won the Locarno Audience Award and the Valladolid Best New Director Award. It represents Australia in the submission for the 2013 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
