In Shanwan Village, the village chief Hu wanted to please the uncle of a disabled youth named Yusheng, who is currently the deputy county mayor, and promised to find a good partner for Yusheng. However, no girls were willing to marry him. In a state of desperation, Hu asked a local young man, Liangzi, to impersonate Yusheng and go on a blind date with a girl named Juanzi from Xing Shuwa Village. Juanzi, who was skilled but suffered from poverty and her mother's illness, agreed to the marriage upon seeing Liangzi's handsome appearance. On their wedding night, the deception was revealed, and an enraged Juanzi kicked Yusheng out of anger. Juanzi sought justice through a lawsuit but found no legal recourse and returned to Xing Shuwa, while Yusheng's family desperately sought her return. Considering the dowry from Yusheng’s family, Juanzi reluctantly went back. To stabilize Juanzi, Hu arranged for her to be the village accountant. Yusheng had health issues, and all the labor fell on Juanzi. Liangzi, feeling guilty about the marriage deceit, explained everything to Juanzi while she was plowing the fields. Hu's niece, Zihua, loved Liangzi, but Hu was determined to marry Zihua off to the local agronomist Tian Dawei. Through their interactions, Liangzi and Juanzi developed feelings for each other, which Zihua discovered. Consequently, Zihua seduced Liangzi into a relationship and threatened him into marrying her. Liangzi was torn between getting married and his ambitions of power, as he believed that being with Zihua would offer him a better life. When Juanzi learned of this, she cried bitterly. As the village was developing party members, Hu chose Juanzi over Liangzi to be a probationary member—why? In a desperate move, Zihua revealed Hu’s true intentions to Hu. Hu's son, Hu Tiancheng, was a local bully. He had long coveted a girl named Xiuhong from the village under the pretense of providing help. One day, when Hu Tiancheng saw Xiuhong working alone, he forced himself on her. When Xiuhong resisted, she injured him in a moment of panic. Unexpectedly, Hu Tiancheng, the villain, falsely reported her and provided false testimony. In Xiuhong's difficult situation, she found Juanzi, who wrote a statement on her behalf, and Liangzi testified, angering Hu. The newly appointed village party secretary, Yuan, visited Shanwan Village for research and, discontent with Hu's deceptive practices, Juanzi reported the real situation of the village's work to Yuan. Considering Juanzi's youth, education, and drive, she was appointed as the acting deputy village head. Hu perceived this as a threat to his power and submitted his resignation to the county. After taking office, Juanzi was determined to meet expectations and worked hard for the village's poverty alleviation. However, due to limited conditions, she found herself unable to make progress. Coincidentally, her fellow villager Zhu Yongfa, who had recently become wealthy, approached Juanzi with a proposal to cooperate in establishing a brick factory in Shanwan Village. The villagers were unenthusiastic about the factory—why? It turned out that the Hu family was behind this, believing that one must first build roads to get rich. Rather than helping, the Hu family made things difficult for Juanzi. To make matters worse, Yusheng fell seriously ill during the rainy season, and while carrying Yusheng to the hospital, Juanzi was swept away by floodwaters but was fortunately rescued. Juanzi had to care for Yusheng while also managing road repairs. Liangzi, wanting to help, rented a bulldozer from relatives, significantly speeding up the work. However, when road construction reached the Hu family's homestead, Hu Tiancheng caused trouble again. Juanzi denounced Hu Tiancheng's bullying, resolutely demolished the homestead, and thus quelled Hu's arrogance. But at that moment, tragedy struck as Yusheng passed away. Under Hu Tiancheng's instigation, Yusheng's family sued Juanzi again. When Juanzi went to the county seat for errands, Hu Tiancheng spread lies, incited a mob to steal materials meant for the factory. When Juanzi arrived at the destroyed site in a rage, she confronted Hu Tiancheng, who, claiming to be injured, sought medical expenses from Juanzi and raided her home. Liangzi warned her. Secretary Yuan quickly gathered related personnel and rushed to Shanwan Village. When the police arrested Hu Tiancheng and others, Juanzi vouched for Hu. Just as the project reached a critical moment, Zhu Yongfa mysteriously disappeared. It turned out he had been absent for days because of a woman. To expedite the factory's completion, Juanzi took Zhu Yongfa’s car keys. Seeing Juanzi was eager to finish the factory, Zhu proposed outrageous conditions. For the sake of her fellow villagers and the factory, Juanzi reluctantly accepted the humiliating conditions, suppressing her bitter anger and finally revealing feelings she had kept hidden. Zhu seemed to understand something. Zhu Yongfa quietly returned to Shanwan Village. Seeing Liangzi frequently helping Juanzi, Zihua grew jealous and often quarreled with him. By coincidence, she met Zhu Yongfa, and they began a relationship. When Liangzi discovered Zihua and Zhu's affair, he was devastated but, wanting to keep Zhu in Shanwan Village and finish the brick factory, tolerated everything. As the factory started taking shape, Secretary Yuan was very pleased. After dinner, Liangzi, under the influence of alcohol, confessed his true feelings to Juanzi, wanting to divorce Zihua and marry her. The brick factory was completed, and county leaders fully recognized Juanzi's achievements in leading the villagers through hard work. Yuan informed Juanzi that the plaintiff in her case had withdrawn, suggesting that they let the past be the past, and encouraged her to keep up the good work. Zihua, holding her divorce certificate, left with Zhu Yongfa. The brick factory buzzed with activity, Shanwan Village changed, and its people seemed to have matured significantly, genuinely feeling the presence of sincere friendships. Hu and Juanzi often had heart-to-heart talks, reaching mutual understanding, and Hu offered to introduce Liangzi to Juanzi. Zihua knelt before Juanzi, pleading with her to leave Liangzi, and Juanzi agreed… Juanzi took the civil service examination and, upon being hired by the township government, news spread quickly, attracting many villagers who didn't want her to leave. Would Juanzi stay?
