In 1927, the white terror loomed over China. While the underground Communist Party members Xia Feng and Zhu Lei secretly met at a café, they were ambushed by Kuomintang agent Gao Yang. Zhu Lei’s twelve-year-old daughter Zhu Meiyun witnessed her father’s death right in front of her. Xia Feng was severely wounded and captured; his fiancée, progressive student Lu Mei, fought through her grief and hurriedly fled with Zhu Meiyun. Ten years later, Shanghai had become an isolated island. Lu Mei, now a bomb expert for the Communist Party, lost contact with her organization and ended up in Shanghai. Zhu Meiyun, now a sniper driven by revenge for her father, also returned to Shanghai. The two unexpectedly encountered their enemy, Gao Yang. Under the call of national righteousness, they sought common ground while reserving differences. Patriotic nurse Meng Xianglan, wealthy gang member Zhao Fei, bodyguard Ye San, and female guerrilla Tieniu successively joined, forming a unique anti-Japanese team behind enemy lines. Deputy director Watanabe secretly plotted the merger of north and south traitors. Meanwhile, a brutal contest was also taking place between the Military Command and the 76th Unit. It was a massacre among classmates and friends. Adhering to the principle of resisting Japan together, Lu Mei led the team to assist Gao Yang in punishing a batch of heinous traitors, paying a painful price herself. The Shanghai station of the Military Command was dismantled, and Communist liaison Old Ma was sacrificed. In the end, Lu Mei cleverly induced Watanabe to fall for a trap, eliminating traitor Wang Maolin. Watanabe's plan for north-south merger was forced to fail. After much effort, Lu Mei finally reestablished contact with her organization. Considering the characteristics of her team, the organization decided to have Lu Mei continue leading the team to execute anti-Japanese tasks behind enemy lines. Watanabe learned that the Nationalist government was secretly transferring a batch of national treasures from the Forbidden City to the south. He kept a close eye on these treasures and immediately dispatched 76th Unit director Wang Qun to pursue leads. Due to severe damage to the Military Command's Shanghai station, Gao Yang had no choice but to seek help from Lu Mei. Following higher orders, Lu Mei led her team to fully assist Gao Yang. With the cooperation of the local guerrillas, they successfully ambushed Watanabe, relaying the information before him. Watanabe's plan once again failed. Japanese war correspondent Musashi witnessed the horrors of the Nanjing Massacre, leading to severe mental trauma. He secretly escaped with photographs documenting the atrocities of the Japanese army. The Japanese military dispatched an elite task force to kill him to eliminate the evidence. Lu Mei was ordered to lead her team to escort Musashi to Chongqing. During the escort, the team inadvertently entered a Japanese military secret base. They witnessed Japanese brainwashed youths killing their adoptive parents with their own hands, which greatly shocked the team. Musashi began to reevaluate the war. After several confrontations, the Japanese task force was eliminated. The records of the Nanjing Massacre were safely sent to Chongqing, and the Japanese atrocities were made public. With the assistance of the underground party, Lu Mei led her team to procure a batch of urgently needed medicines for the New Fourth Army's battlefield hospital. Watanabe sent spy Meizi to assist Sada in tracking the team, attempting to find out the location of their battlefield hospital. After recognizing Watanabe's conspiracy, Lu Mei used a feigned opportunity to release false information, luring Sada into a prearranged encirclement. Although Sada narrowly escaped, spy Meizi was shot dead by Zhu Meiyun. The medicine was successfully delivered to the hospital, and the injured received treatment. Watanabe discovered the newly built weapons factory of the New Fourth Army through clues, and military expert Professor Sun was assassinated by Sada. To save the newly established military industry of the party, Lu Mei received orders from the organization to return to Shanghai and welcome back a firearms expert returning from Germany. Upon learning of the situation, Watanabe dispatched Sada to pursue the firearms expert. Lu Mei devised a plan, arranging Gao Yang to create chaos to take the firearms master amid the commotion. Sada followed closely but was cleverly shot by Zhu Meiyun. The firearms expert was safely sent to the base, and the weapons factory resumed operations. Having lost his right-hand men, Watanabe summoned Oye and Aki to his side. Watanabe intercepted an important password box. To obtain the documents inside intact, he sent Oye to infiltrate Tilanqiao Prison to assist imprisoned code expert Smith in escaping. Gao Yang also infiltrated the prison to try to stop Oye, only to find that Smith successfully escaped on his own. Upon learning this information, our party dispatched Lu Mei to lead her team to assist Gao Yang in reclaiming the documents from the password box. Through Lu Mei's clever arrangements, the team successfully switched the password box with Smith. The password box was successfully opened, and Gao Yang safely delivered the documents to Chongqing. The team also accomplished their mission successfully. A patriotic overseas Chinese's donation was kept in a Swiss bank, but only the out-of-concession Frank could withdraw the money. Therefore, Gao Yang led the Military Command action team to raid the Suzhou concentration camp. Although Gao Yang rescued Frank, the action team suffered heavy casualties. Lu Mei received orders from the organization to fully assist the Military Command in relocating Frank. This operation was overseen by the Military Command commander codenamed "Master." However, in the "Master's" plan, this Communist team was meant to play the role of cannon fodder. Upon learning this, Gao Yang resolutely returned to Lu Mei and others, choosing to live and die with the comrades he once fought alongside. The team encountered an ambush by the Japanese army, and Zhu Meiyun sacrificed herself. Zhao Fei and Ye San used their lives as bait to divert Watanabe. During the cover and retreat process, Tieniu also heroically sacrificed. In the end, while Frank was safely sent away, the team paid a heavy price. Japan surrendered. Watanabe, attempting to evade trial through deception, was recognized by Lu Mei, leading to a duel between the two. In a moment of crisis, Xia Feng, who had been missing for many years, suddenly appeared and shot Watanabe dead. Reunited with her lover, Lu Mei discovered many suspicions surrounding Xia Feng. Thus, Lu Mei secretly investigated. The events of that year gradually became clear: Zhu Lei learned that Xia Feng was an undercover agent concealed within our party and decided to eliminate him. At the same time, Xia Feng felt his exposure and ordered Gao Yang to lay an ambush at the café. Lu Mei and Xia Feng, this pair of lovers, fell apart over their beliefs. At a critical moment, Gao Yang appeared, joining forces with Lu Mei to eliminate "Master" Xia Feng. Looking back on the past, Gao Yang realized that his beliefs had changed, and under Lu Mei's influence, he embarked on the path of revolution.
