In 1927, the white terror loomed over China. While the underground Communist Party members Xia Feng and Zhu Lei secretly met at a café, they were ambushed by Kuomintang agent Gao Yang. Zhu Lei’s twelve-year-old daughter Zhu Meiyun witnessed her father’s death right in front of her. Xia Feng was severely wounded and captured; his fiancée, progressive student Lu Mei, fought through her grief and hurriedly fled with Zhu Meiyun.
