In his early twenties, Axi (played by Ren Zhong) has an IQ of only nine. He is considered mildly intellectually disabled. His mother (played by Mi Xue) tells him, "Everyone is born to walk a path, a long journey in life. I think if we walk for a long time, we must get tired. If everyone could hold hands and walk together, talk, and play games, wouldn't that make it less tiring?" This allows Axi to happily walk through each day. His mother, A Ping (played by Mi Xue), does not want to hurt Axi's feelings, so she hides the fact that his biological father abandoned him. She struggles to raise Axi alone. Although their life is tough, they live a simple and peaceful existence full of happiness under the love of his mother. However, an accidental loss changes Axi's life forever. Axi ends up wandering into a strange town, where he meets an eccentric and reclusive old man (played by Li Lichun) who pulls a rickshaw. The old man, known as "Old Bitter Gourd," has a bad temper and no one wants to be near him. He has a mysterious past; over twenty years ago, he was a musician with a happy family, including a wife and child. Unfortunately, to help a friend, he left his son home alone, and upon returning, he watched helplessly as his son was consumed by fire, which also damaged his vocal cords. Struck by the loss of his child and misunderstood by his wife, who suspected infidelity, the old man has been left feeling isolated and distrustful of love, as someone hid the truth to protect their own reputation. His wife, filled with hatred for his perceived weakness and betrayal, left him, and he carries this regret with him, believing there is no love, emotion, or hope left in the world. However, the innocent and lovable Axi disrupts the old man’s closed-off world. They struggle to communicate at first, but their bond eventually resembles that of a father and son. Axi reaches out to people using simple words and an open heart, demonstrating his persistence and dedication to love. This reflection prompts the old man to question, "If Axi can do it, why can't we ordinary people?" Others are also touched; under Axi's influence, teacher Ye Lan confronts her conflict-ridden parents, and the underappreciated photographer Tian Jing regains his confidence. The old man begins to confront his past... During his search for his mother, Axi experiences two significant relationships. The first is his affection for Ye Lan, the music teacher, who reminds him of his mother and brings him warmth and hope. However, Ye Lan loves Tian Jing, rejecting Axi and giving him his first taste of heartbreak. In his moments of disappointment, he encounters a rebellious girl named Dong Dong, who often flies kites. Initially, she enjoys teasing Axi, but their relationship evolves into a subtle love story despite opposition from others... In the end, after enduring countless hardships, the mother and son reunite, but Axi faces a life-and-death crisis once again...
