During the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty, Yan Liben encounters a case where Di Renjie (played by Ren Jialun) is wrongfully imprisoned. After helping him save himself, Yan discovers that Di Renjie is a genius detective. The emperor then sends him to investigate a case at the Gan Ye Temple, and he decides to bring Di Renjie along. At the Gan Ye Temple, Di Renjie solves a bizarre case, averting a major disaster for the Buddhist community, and establishing a connection with Wu Meiniang. Di Renjie astonishes everyone and is dispatched to Bingzhou, during which he continuously solves strange cases and is dubbed "Shenpan" (God's Judge). There arises a case of ghost soldiers killing people from the previous dynasty; Di Renjie goes to investigate and uncovers connections to the treasure of the previous dynasty and the rebellious intentions of Prince Li Tai, but the evidence is destroyed, preventing further investigation. At this time, a case involving Wu Meiniang killing her own daughter and framing Empress Wang occurs, prompting the emperor to summon Di Renjie back to Chang'an. Based on the clues provided by Wu Meiniang, Di Renjie cracks the case and finds the treasure from the previous dynasty at Li Tai's residence, which serves as definitive evidence of Prince Li's rebellion. Di Renjie also realizes that the person who has helped him resolve obstacles during his previous investigations is actually Wu Meiniang, leading him to perceive her as unfathomable with ambitions beyond his imagination. Not long after, Emperor Gaozong suffers a sudden illness and summons Wu Meiniang to attend court, together referred to as the "Two Saints."
