The play "The Tale" uses the life of the famous poet of the Northern Song dynasty, Liu Sanbian (Liu Yong), as a thread to depict a thrilling political struggle concerning the fate of the country and the nation during the early Song period. In the early Song dynasty, the situation was somewhat stable, but the Western Xia frequently attacked the borders, and remnants of the Southern Tang pretended to be Liu Sanbian's loyal subjects, waiting for the opportunity to restore their state. The recently peaceful lives of the common people were once again faced with the calamities of war. Liu Sanbian, talented in both literature and martial arts, had a heart filled with concern for his country and people. He understood that when war broke out, the common folk would suffer greatly; seeing the Crown Prince of the Song dynasty dedicated to governance and the country gradually stabilizing and flourishing, he resolutely gave up the best opportunity for restoration to help the Song dynasty quell the Western Xia rebellion, setting the nation and the people on a path of peace and prosperity. Liu Yong longed for a life of passion and freedom, cared for the lower classes, and especially sympathized with the insulted and harmed lower-class courtesans. Writing lyrics for the courtesans was both a necessity for his livelihood and an expression of his free-spirited personality, shining with the brilliance of freedom and humanity. Under China's thousands of years of feudal rule, Liu Yong was continuously marginalized by orthodox literati and could hardly find acceptance in mainstream culture, having no biography in "The History of Song." The play "The Tale" fully showcases and praises Liu Sanbian’s poetry and life, presenting the finest and most progressive cultural essence of traditional Chinese culture to the world.
