Colors gradually fade in a life lacking security. Ouyao, who lives in constant fear, vehemently opposes her husband going abroad. After the death of her father, Ouyao's mother becomes increasingly critical of her son-in-law, even insisting that her husband's death was due to his long-standing dissatisfaction with his daughter's marriage to Bao Pingan. In the 1990s, Bao Pingan started a small restaurant. Bao's parents always believed their son would be successful, but Ouyao's mother disdainfully regarded Bao Pingan as merely a small business owner, leading to frequent arguments between the families. Bao Pingan longs to go abroad, and through a friend, he contacts a smuggling channel, selling the restaurant for money to pay the "snakehead." At a critical moment, Ouyao's mother reports him to the police, and Bao Pingan is detained. Extremely disappointed in Bao Pingan, Ouyao attends a university reunion, where Xu Zhifeng, who traveled from Shenzhen, had once been in love with her, but at that time, Ouyao was very much in love with Bao Pingan. During this reunion, Ouyao gets drunk and loses control. She rests in Xu Zhifeng's guest room while her clothes are sent to the laundry, and when Bao Pingan comes to the hotel looking for her, he finds Xu Zhifeng with Ouyao, who is only wearing her underwear... Bao Pingan and Ouyao separate, agreeing to wait until their daughter finishes middle school to divorce. Unexpectedly, due to various life changes, the divorce process drags on, and until their daughter finishes high school, they maintain the illusion of a harmonious marriage. After the dream of going abroad is completely shattered, Bao Pingan, now in middle age, gets a job at Fuyangchun Hotel. After several years of hard work, he becomes the deputy chef. Bao Pingan develops feelings for Zhao Meng, the new restaurant manager, who has faced difficulties in love and remains unmarried at over 30. She carefully avoids this relationship, fearing further hurt. After years of quarrels, Bao Pingan and Ouyao finally complete their divorce procedures, but they are at a loss regarding how to face their daughter. 15-year-old Bao Chun is smart and sensitive, repeatedly threatening that her parents' divorce will lead her to become wayward. Bao Pingan and Ouyao agree to keep the divorce a secret from their daughter, allowing her to gradually accept it. After a tumultuous emotional journey, Zhao Meng finally accepts Bao Pingan's feelings, and they move in together. Zhao Meng understands Bao Pingan's difficulties and agrees to marry after Bao Chun gets into college. In the following life, Bao Pingan deeply realizes the correctness of a saying: Chinese men should not expect to live peacefully after divorce. To care for his daughter's emotions, Bao Pingan occasionally returns to the original home to play the role of a good father and husband, while also being careful to consider Zhao Meng's feelings. The biggest headache for him is that Ouyao is actually reluctant to divorce and still holds hope for their reconciliation. To avoid affecting Zhao Meng, who also works at the hotel, Bao Pingan reluctantly resigns. However, finding a new job is not easy; not only is the salary significantly lower, but sacrificing his career does not help him retain Zhao Meng's love. Zhao Meng painfully admits that Ouyao has never let go of Bao Pingan, and it feels like a tug-of-war between her and Ouyao. Bao Pingan cannot sever his sense of responsibility toward his daughter and ex-wife – no woman is willing to endure such a situation, so she decides to give love a way out, allowing Bao Pingan to choose for himself. Bao Pingan returns to Ouyao's side, but soon, Ouyao discovers that life is not as beautiful as she imagined. After experiencing divorce and reconciliation, they become polite to each other, carefully navigating sensitive issues. However, no matter how hard they try, nothing can return to the past. They cannot forget each other’s betrayals, and both feel an invisible exhaustion, an unbearable torment... In 2005, their daughter finally gets into college. Before leaving, she主动谈了很长一段时间, 现在她能够理解父母感情的不合,强迫父母走在一起是她自私,她没有考虑过父母的感受,没有想过父母重新开始各自的新生活可能会是更好的结局。 Bao Pingan sighs in his heart; his daughter has grown up. Ouyao also expresses her feelings, stating that mended relationships are still broken, and though the pain may lessen, the cracks remain, still striking and causing pain. The past experiences cannot be erased, and her daughter’s words finally make her realize she should learn to let go and allow Bao Pingan to pursue his own life. Ouyao’s words echo Bao Pingan’s thoughts. After enduring emotional struggles, Bao Pingan is eager to make a comeback in his career. A new hotel in another city extends a warm invitation to him, and he really wants to seize this good opportunity, with Ouyao encouraging him to accept the offer. Facing the prospect of parting again, Bao Pingan and Ouyao remain calm, as this is their mutual choice, and they smile in understanding. Bao Pingan boards the train heading north, and at this moment, he feels an unprecedented attachment to the city he once wanted to escape from. Those he loves and who love him flash before his eyes... A new life begins.
