This drama tells a seven-year "Infernal Affairs"-like story between a Communist underground party member and a Kuomintang intelligence officer. Xue Shaoqing and Liu Yongqiang are classmates and close friends from the "Sanhe Radio School," serving in the Shanghai underground party of the Communist Party and the military control bureau of the Kuomintang, respectively. Both excel in their roles, repeatedly providing crucial intelligence to their organizations, contributing to the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan. With the onset of the Liberation War, Xue Shaoqing and Liu Yongqiang become unknown adversaries. They cleverly navigate one rigorous examination after another, narrowly escaping disaster! Eventually, one day, they suspect that the other is the undercover agent they have been trying to eliminate. Tension escalates as they set one trap after another to expose each other. Xin Qing is Xue Shaoqing's superior and his lover, but due to work discipline, they keep their relationship hidden from the organization. In order to root out the spies hidden within and obtain crucial intelligence for the Huaihai battlefield, Xin Qing grudgingly orders Xue Shaoqing to marry Zhang Jiawen, the daughter of his superior at the military control bureau who is pursuing him. However, Xin Qing does not anticipate that Zhang Jiawen soon becomes pregnant. Although Liu Yongqiang is undercover within the Communist underground party, he secretly has feelings for his superior Xin Qing, but ultimately, to prevent his identity from being exposed, he devises a plan to kill her. On the eve of Shanghai's liberation, Xue Shaoqing and Liu Yongqiang finally engage in a life-and-death struggle. In her effort to protect her lover and send out intelligence, Xin Qing sacrifices her own life. Xue Shaoqing outsmarts and outmatches Liu Yongqiang, witnessing the dawn of the new China. Guo Xiaofeng plays Huang Zhe, a staunchly faithful Communist Party member who has long led his underground party colleagues in a battle of wits against enemy operatives, only to tragically end up imprisoned due to betrayal and ultimately sacrifices himself.
