In June 1946, Chiang Kai-shek tore up the "Ceasefire Agreement" and launched a full-scale civil war. On September 29, the Kuomintang attacked Yanqing with the strength of an army and aimed to capture Zhangjiakou. The militia team of Dong Cunrui, who had just joined the regular troops, arrived in Yanqing on October 3 to intercept the enemy attacking from Badaling on the eastern front. To cover the retreat of the entire company to complete their mission, Dong Cunrui's squad leader, Communist Party member Luo Zhiying, proactively volunteered to lead the soldiers of the sixth squad to cover their retreat. The covering task was extremely difficult, and in the end, the squad leader died in front of Dong Cunrui while trying to protect him. Just before dying, Luo Zhiying told Dong Cunrui to "live on and advance!" Remarkably, Dong Cunrui, Wang Haishan, and Sun Daguan managed to break out of the encirclement and returned to their unit's base. Dong Cunrui was arranged by the company commander to the cooking class for self-reflection on the mistakes made during the battle. To everyone’s surprise, Dong Cunrui had great luck and seized a large cache of enemy weapons with a carrying pole, achieving great merit and returning to the sixth squad. In order to reorganize the sixth squad, Dong Cunrui had a fierce conflict with the newly appointed sixth squad leader Wang Haishan, who re-established an elite class known as the fifth squad after returning from his injuries. With the encouragement from his captain Zhao, whom he admired, Dong Cunrui decided to compete with Wang Haishan and the fifth squad; he finally assembled the sixth squad, centered around Sun Daguan, Liu Yulin, Zhi Zhenbiao, Zhu Sanliang, Niu Yuhe, and Zou Ergou. Due to his personality, he initially didn't get along well with all the squad members, and the entire sixth squad was disorganized, which Wang Haishan mockingly called the "Dough Squad." The instructor also began to doubt Dong Cunrui’s leadership abilities. In Wang Haishan's mind, how could the sixth squad led by Dong Cunrui possibly compete on the same starting line as the fifth squad and himself? This was further evidenced in the subsequent battle against the returning home brigade, where Wang Haishan's fifth squad took the lead in the frontal attack and achieved a great victory, pushing the enemy all the way to the front line of Dong Cunrui and the sixth squad, capturing the leader of the returning home brigade. From then on, Wang Haishan never looked at Dong Cunrui with respect again. Zou Ergou, a liberator from Dong Cunrui's sixth squad, gradually received baptism and transformation in the revolutionary crucible, though his growth was inconsistent. He wanted to join the Party, even actively paying Dong Cunrui party dues twice, but his motives were not so pure; during the battle of Yunding Peak, faced with intense enemy fire, he was so scared that he urinated his pants and failed to blow up the fortifications in time, nearly jeopardizing the assault; because of Zou Ergou's serious mistake, all the fifth squad soldiers except Wang Haishan were sacrificed. Wang Haishan was heartbroken. Wang Haishan wanted to reorganize the fifth squad. He set his sights on Zhi Zhenbiao, who was proficient in various tactics from Dong Cunrui’s squad, and Liu Yulin, who excelled at sniping. Liu Yulin firmly refused to go, but Zhi Zhenbiao was somewhat tempted, as being part of the fifth squad had once been a dream of his. Unexpectedly, Dong Cunrui brought all members of the sixth squad in front of Wang Haishan, letting him choose at will. Wang Haishan was touched. Stubborn Dong Cunrui kept his determination; over time, during training and life, he discovered the characteristics of every soldier in the sixth squad and applied them in actual combat. Under Dong Cunrui's changed leadership, the sixth squad developed a brotherly friendship. Finally, through Dong Cunrui's efforts, the sixth squad became the most powerful elite squad. Dong Cunrui also became an honored provisional member of the Communist Party of China. On another front, Dong Cunrui established a deep bond with the local villagers, such as Aunt Niu from the nearby Niu Zhuang and Zhao Guizhi. The civilian girl Xiuer, due to Dong Cunrui saving her life, seemed to share a closer relationship with him than with others. Xiuer had obvious feelings for the simple Dong Cunrui, but he, focused on fighting and achieving military merit, was entirely oblivious. During a 15-day resistance battle against the encroachment of Chiang's troops into the Jirecha Liberation Zone, Zou Ergou’s cowardice and self-preserving behavior indirectly led to the sacrifice of Comrade Niu Yuhe. Ultimately, Zou Ergou accidentally killed his life saver, Dahei. The sacrifice of Niu Yuhe and the death of Dahei had a devastating impact on Zou Ergou; to escape his inner turmoil, he became a deserter, privately leaving the unit to pursue the small life he dreamed of. War is brutal, and Dong Cunrui's comrades fell one by one heroically. Dong Cunrui himself gradually became a qualified Communist Party member and a grassroots commanding officer in the army through the baptism of war. After the winter offensive of the Northeast People's Liberation Army ended, Dong Cunrui's unit was formally renamed the 96th Regiment, 32nd Division, 11th Corps of the Northeast People’s Liberation Army, with the sixth squad as the sixth battalion. The unit was commanded to take swift and decisive action to eliminate the Kuomintang's 13th Army, liberate the entire Rehe, and sever the connection between the enemy forces in North China and Northeast China. In early May, the unit departed from Chaoshan to attack the gateway to Rehe Province's capital Chengde—Longhua. The situation in the city remained unclear, and in a fit of urgency, Dong Cunrui devised a plan to disguise himself as a husband with Xiuer to sneak into the city for reconnaissance. With the tacit approval of the company commander, Dong Cunrui and Xiuer managed to accomplish their task after some difficulties. In the end, in a time of great crisis, it was actually the awakened Zou Ergou who helped them return to their ranks. Zou Ergou also fully committed himself to the fight due to the death of his lover, Er Ya. At a "Demolition Marshal" election meeting held for the entire regiment, Dong Cunrui, well prepared, won the trust of the leaders and all soldiers with his attitude and became the "Demolition Marshal" for the regiment’s attack on Longhua Middle School. The battle began. Dong Cunrui led the demolition team to successively blow up four enemy turrets and five bunkers, successfully completing the task of clearing the perimeter of Longhua Middle School. At 3:30 PM, the second general assault began. The sixth squad launched an charge against Longhua Middle School. Dong Cunrui and his demolition team members quickly took out one enemy fire point after another, both visible and concealed. Just as everyone thought they had completely cleared the enemy fire points, suddenly, from atop a dry bridge, the enemy's machine guns unleashed several streams of deadly fire. In a critical moment, Dong Cunrui desperately charged under the dry bridge. The offensive battle had already been signaled, and his comrades began to charge fiercely toward this location, not knowing how many would fall under the enemy fire of the dry bridge. Without a moment’s hesitation, Dong Cunrui pressed the explosives package with his left hand and then pulled the fuse. Amidst the hissing of the fuse, Dong Cunrui turned back and loudly shouted to the army's position, "For the New China, advance!" With an earth-shattering explosion, the bridge-type bunker was obliterated. A large number of follow-up troops charged into Longhua Middle School, completely annihilating the defending enemy, and the red flag was raised over Longhua City; Longhua was liberated! Dong Cunrui and his comrades paved the way for the unit and for the liberation of all of China with their blood and lives.
