In June 1946, Chiang Kai-shek tore up the "Ceasefire Agreement" and launched a full-scale civil war. On September 29, the Kuomintang attacked Yanqing with the strength of an army and aimed to capture Zhangjiakou. The militia team of Dong Cunrui, who had just joined the regular troops, arrived in Yanqing on October 3 to intercept the enemy attacking from Badaling on the eastern front. To cover the retreat of the entire company to complete their mission, Dong Cunrui's squad leader, Communist Party member Luo Zhiying, proactively volunteered to lead the soldiers of the sixth squad to cover their retreat.
