The story takes place in Shanghai in 1985. Facing the prospect of reporting to Peking University, Sun Yuxin (played by Ju Xue) suddenly loses her mother in a car accident, leaving her to care for three underage siblings, all of whom are the children of prisoners her mother adopted while working as a prison guard. Yuxin abandons her university aspirations and supports her three unrelated siblings through work, during which she also experiences a brief marriage. Ten years later, her siblings grow up one by one, while Yuxin contemplates whether to marry her long-time high school friend Da Shu (played by Dong Yong), who has always helped her but remains unmarried.
