The forty-episode TV series "Caoyun Pier" is adapted from the historical novel of the same name by Wang Zifu. It tells the story of Aisin Gioro Tielin, the Governor of the warehouse, who is appointed to the Caoyun Pier in Tongzhou during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty to rectify the corrupt practices of grain transportation. In the nineteenth year of Daoguang, the emperor ordered Lin Zexu to Guangzhou to ban opium, Governor of Jiangsu and Zhejiang Tao Shu to rectify salt administration, and appointed Aisin Gioro Tielin as the warehouse governor to eliminate the increasingly rampant and deeply ingrained corrupt practices. Tielin, a member of the royal family, was determined to repay the emperor's grace and restore the glory of his ancestors, and he resolved to take strong measures to eradicate corruption and punish wrongdoing in hopes of achieving merit and fame. The Caoyun Pier was filled with official buildings, a mix of civil and military personnel, with a complex network of people engaged in various professions, creating a corrupt and lawless independent kingdom. With the imperial authority in his mouth, Tielin disguised himself to investigate and deeply felt the numerous corrupt issues and the pervasive crisis. On the day of the grain transportation, Tielin uncovered a forgery case involving grain from Linqing Wei, publicly punishing the transporting officer Xu Jiachuan and exiling him to Ningguta. Despite strong opposition from the grain office, he dismissed the grain broker Ma Changshan and promoted the young and capable Chen Tianlun to oversee the grain collection. Minister of the Ministry of Finance Wang Ding had long been prepared to eradicate corruption and had previously placed trusted individuals in the grain office, collecting solid evidence of corruption involving the Grand Scholar Mu Zhangya. However, the mysterious disappearance of informant Huang Huai'an, the treacherous plans of the grain office’s Liu Liangnian, the influence of gang leader Zhou Sanye, the scheming of the Tongzhou magistrate Xia Yuxuan, the mysterious background of Tielin’s wet nurse Han Xiaoyue, and the shadowy presence of the local witch doctor Tang Dagu all intertwined, clouding the Caoyun Pier in mystery and escalating the suspense. Just as Tielin was risking his life and name to address the deep-rooted issues, his beloved daughter Gan Rong and disobedient son Gan Rui became entangled in the affairs at Caoyun Pier. Gan Rong stubbornly fell in love with the grain broker Chen Tianlun, while Gan Rui got involved with the mafia. Xue Liangnian's adopted son Niuniu and the Tielin family's maid Dongmei secretly tasted forbidden fruit, ultimately resulting in him being castrated and sent to the palace as a eunuch. Tielin had a childhood obsession with milk, and his relationship with his wet nurse Han Xiaoyue was complicated, but she got embroiled in a bizarre frog case, leading to a series of strange, mysterious, and even deadly incidents... A deadly contest thus unfurled at Caoyun Pier. "Caoyun Pier" is the first domestic TV series reflecting the history of grain transportation. Set against the backdrop of the enormous changes during the Daoguang era, this drama focuses on anti-corruption and vividly showcases the various concerns and struggles of the Qing Dynasty as it transitioned from prosperity to decline, from the royal family to the central authority, and from the public sector to common people. The structure of the series is meticulous, the plot is tight, the perspective is unique, and the style is innovative, portraying a group of upright and loyal main characters. The drama features gripping legendary stories and rich regional characteristics, showcasing traditional folk culture and reflecting deep cultural heritage and high artistic quality, with a strong realistic critical tone.
