In the early years of the Republic, in Lingjiang County... That night, the grand hall was packed with no empty seats. Business magnates and local gentry gathered here to attend the "Charity Fundraising Gala for Dike and Dam Construction." The organizer was Yu Botao, the owner of the Dafan Flour Mill, and the performers included the well-known Qingyi (female lead) actress “Xiao Juhua” and her troupe, the "Dajiangnan Theater." The performance garnered unprecedented success and applause, and funds for the dike and dam construction were raised. The county chief delivered a speech of thanks on behalf of all the county residents and announced that tonight's performance was Xiao Juhua's farewell show from the flower platform and that from now on she would wholeheartedly be Yu Botao's wife. After a round of gasps and sighs from the audience, everyone's envious gaze turned to Yu Botao. Yu Botao held Xiao Juhua's hand and deeply bowed to the guests, stating that Xiao Juhua would open a class in Lingjiang to teach Peking opera for free to local youth. Thunderous applause brought the evening to its peak and left a deep impression of love between the Botao couple in the hearts of the villagers. With such a beautiful wife, Yu Botao was naturally in high spirits, yet his fondness for Xiao Juhua stirred jealousy in his second wife, Wang Cailing. Yu Botao's first wife, Xu Yunzhi, was educated and composed, having entered into their marriage through matchmaker arrangements. After many years of marriage without children, Yu Botao married Wang Cailing, who came from a background of socialites. Wang Cailing quickly bore Yu Botao a son after entering the household, and from then on, she relied on her son’s status and became arrogant. The third wife, Xiao Juhua, originally named Yao Ke Ren, married Yu Botao to repay her father's debt, believing that a transactional marriage wouldn't bring happiness. However, she unexpectedly fell in love with Botao due to his thoughtfulness and benevolence, and the two were immersed in sweet happiness. Botao's forgetfulness of his old wife ignited Cailing's jealousy. She not only slandered Ke Ren in front of Yu's mother but also schemed against her, creating a false impression of an illicit affair between Ke Ren and her senior, Ding Youmin. Botao initially did not believe it; however, under Cailing's repeated provocations and the pressure from Yu's mother to maintain family honor, he eventually apprehended Ke Ren and Ding Youmin, locking them in the woodshed and awaiting their transfer to the ancestral hall for public trial at dawn. Fearing her plot would be exposed, Cailing secretly released Ke Ren and Ding Youmin during the night and prepared a boat to send them away from Lingjiang. Ke Ren, believing in her innocence, refused to leave, and in a moment of desperation, Ding Youmin knocked her unconscious. When Ke Ren awoke, she found herself in the boat's cabin, and the boat had already left the dock. She hurriedly ordered the boatman to turn back. Meanwhile, Botao learned of their escape and led Yunzhi, Cailing, and several family attendants in pursuit. Yunzhi commanded the attendants to swim and intercept the boat, while Cailing, feeling guilty, tried to stop them. "Yu Botao" and "Yao Ke Ren" were caught in a battle of conscience. On the boat, Ke Ren saw that the boatman refused to turn back and shouted for help. However, the boatman, who had been bribed by Cailing, set the boat on fire and jumped into the river to escape. With a loud explosion, the entire boat ignited, and amidst the raging flames, Ke Ren and Ding Youmin disappeared into the river along with the wreckage of the boat. Six years later...
