The story takes place in the late Qing dynasty, where Princess Yunxiang (played by Huo Siyan) boldly elopes with the performer Wen Liangyu (played by Chen Jianfeng). Just as they do so, chaos erupts in the capital, and they are separated by the mob. Yunxiang is rescued by her enemy Fang Tianyu (played by Yan Kuan), while Liangyu ends up wandering in the capital, unable to meet her despite being so close. Later, in order to save her mad mother, Yunxiang falls into a brothel, and Liangyu desperately tries to pull her out of the mire. Tianyu schemes to have Liangyu executed, and Yunxiang, who is already pregnant with Liangyu’s child, attempts to assassinate Tianyu but fails, eventually being thrown into a death prison. Tycoon Shen Shihao (played by Sun Xing) wishes to take Yunxiang as his second wife, paying to redeem her; out of gratitude, Yunxiang has no choice but to comply. Time flies, and several years pass. When Yunxiang sees Liangyu again, he has become the powerful gang leader causing chaos in nine cities.
