The story takes place in the hometown of the Confucian sage Mencius—Shandong Province. Meng Lechuan, the 68th descendant of Mencius, is indifferent to studying hard for the imperial examinations, and with his mother's support, he establishes the Ruifuxiang silk shop. His cousin, Gao Xianyong, also abandons his studies to enter business, following the Japanese merchant Taiye Ichiro, ultimately becoming Meng Lechuan's rival. Ruifuxiang faces multiple pressures from local bureaucrats and foreign merchants, forcing him to seek a powerful backer, even reluctantly offering his beloved Dongmei to Yuan Shikai. Through donations to flood control, he earns the imperial bestowed title of “Philanthropic,” but he is unable to purchase a burial plot for his father and himself in the ancestral holy site of Menglin. Gao Xianyong is determined to push Ruifuxiang out of business. When the Eight-Nation Alliance invades Beijing, Ruifuxiang is reduced to ashes. In despair, Meng Lechuan seeks help from Sai Jinhua; Beijing's Ruifuxiang makes a comeback, only to have his mother kidnapped by bandits… The story vividly showcases the awkward predicament of national commerce in late 19th century China.
