Zhang Mingtang, a young officer of the Guizhou Qian Army and son of a wealthy merchant in Tongren, is ordered to return home from the front lines of the anti-communist campaign to oversee the pursuit of the escaping Red Army's Qiangdong Independent Division. He begins to expand and reorganize the local garrison. Due to his sympathy for the wounded Red Army soldiers and the influence of his lover, Huang Feier, he takes a risk to facilitate the evacuation of the Red Army injured, but is betrayed by Sun Rubai, the son of his family's business rival, leading to the failure of the evacuation. As a result, Zhang Mingtang's family suffers a tragic turn of events exploited by the Sun family, and he is wanted for treason. The Red Army mistakenly views him as a traitor. Caught in a dilemma, Zhang Mingtang is sheltered by the leader of the Peach Blossom Village, who admires him.
