Zhang Mingtang, a young officer of the Guizhou Qian Army and son of a wealthy merchant in Tongren, is ordered to return home from the front lines of the anti-communist campaign to oversee the pursuit of the escaping Red Army's Qiangdong Independent Division. He begins to expand and reorganize the local garrison. Due to his sympathy for the wounded Red Army soldiers and the influence of his lover, Huang Feier, he takes a risk to facilitate the evacuation of the Red Army injured, but is betrayed by Sun Rubai, the son of his family's business rival, leading to the failure of the evacuation. As a result, Zhang Mingtang's family suffers a tragic turn of events exploited by the Sun family, and he is wanted for treason. The Red Army mistakenly views him as a traitor.
Caught in a dilemma, Zhang Mingtang is sheltered by the leader of the Peach Blossom Village, who admires him. Determined to seek revenge for his family, he kills his enemies Sun Yaozu and the garrison chief Zhu Hanchun, but unfortunately ends up imprisoned. Peach Blossom comes to his rescue and keeps Zhang Mingtang in the village. He helps Peach Blossom organize the village, train soldiers, and gradually gains the upper hand against the local bandit Ma Sandao, curbing his influence.
Zhang Mingtang's lover, Huang Feier, under various unavoidable pressures, marries Sun Rubai from the Sun family, Zhang's rival. However, she cannot forget Zhang Mingtang, which deepens Sun Rubai's hatred for him as the murderer of his father.
Sun Rubai, once an incompetent young master, determined to enlist in the military under the influence of personal vendettas and familial grievances, rises to become the local garrison's camp leader, leading to years of conflict with Zhang Mingtang.
Though the Red Army's evacuation failed, the seeds of revolution did not die. Under the leadership of Red Army instructor Xia Xue, the party organization was restored, revolutionary forces regrouped, and after the outbreak of the war of resistance, they promoted anti-Japanese sentiments and organized the public to support the front lines. After learning the truth that Zhang Mingtang was not the informant, Xia Xue worked to guide his faith's progress, infusing the blood of the party into Peach Blossom Village, transforming this spontaneous armed group into a progressive force. Zhang Mingtang and Peach Blossom developed feelings for each other and became husband and wife during their mutual growth.
In his military career, Sun Rubai often faced exclusion as an irregular military officer, compounded by the collusion between local bandits and merchants, limiting his achievements. Huang Feier's active performance and courageous actions during the war deeply affected him, leading him to gradually realize that life’s direction should not solely revolve around personal grievances. Tragically, Huang Feier suffered at the hands of Japanese spies and the bandit Ma Sandao while organizing the transportation of anti-Japanese supplies. The sacrifice of his wife awakened Sun Rubai. He devoted himself to eradicating the pro-Japanese bandit Ma Sandao, ensuring the safety of supply routes. With Xia Xue's help and persuasion, Sun Rubai and Zhang Mingtang put aside their past grudges for the greater good of the nation.
The critical battle to defend Southwest China—the Battle of Xuefeng Mountain—entered its most crucial stage. Zhang Mingtang and Sun Rubai joined hands and led local youths onto the battlefield, participating in the Battle of Xuefeng Mountain. In the fierce fighting and their selfless struggle, they held their ground until reinforcement troops arrived, but they ran out of ammunition and supplies. Together, they jumped off a cliff for their hometown, sacrificing their lives for the victory of the Battle of Xuefeng Mountain, while also expressing the heroic song of youthful faith, progress, and selflessness for the country.
