In 1950, except for western Sichuan, the entire mainland of China had been liberated. As the liberating army advanced towards Xichang, Chiang Kai-shek ordered Hu Zongnan to hold western Sichuan at all costs, waiting for changes in the international situation. Thus, Mount Tianmeng, the first major danger in western Sichuan, became a key battleground for both the Kuomintang and the Communist forces. Ma Yiwu, a cultural instructor in a certain unit of the People’s Liberation Army who had served for five years, had not been able to join the party because his elder brother was an officer in the Kuomintang. While advancing towards Xichang, the cultural work team was collectively captured by the Kuomintang forces. Just as they were about to be executed, a Kuomintang officer, because of Ma Yiwu, decided to release the entire cultural work team. This incident raised significant doubts among the cultural work team about Ma Yiwu's true identity. At this time, a certain unit of the People’s Liberation Army encountered setbacks while attacking the Kuomintang's 183rd Division entrenched on Mount Tianmeng. When the military headquarters sent Major General Mei Dashui to reinforce, he learned that the commander of the 183rd Division was Ma Yiwen, the eldest son of the Ma family, where Ma Yiwu's younger brother was a cultural instructor in the PLA’s cultural work team. Believing that Ma Yiwen valued brotherly loyalty, Mei Dashui decided to let Ma Yiwu use their familial ties to persuade his brother to surrender at the front. When Mei Dashui assigned the task of persuading his brother to surrender to Ma Yiwu, Ma Yiwu was unwilling to go...(read more) to do the persuasion work. It turned out that Ma Yiwu's girlfriend from university had been forcibly taken by Ma Yiwen, leading to an irreconcilable enmity between the brothers. After some persuasion, Ma Yiwu still wrote a letter to Ma Yiwen advising him to surrender, but unexpectedly, Ma Yiwen replied saying that due to the overwhelming situation, he had sent someone to negotiate with the PLA and decided to surrender. A certain unit's Commander Sun led Ma Yiwu and a platoon to accept the surrender, but unexpectedly, Ma Yiwen was feigning surrender, and all these soldiers of the PLA were captured and taken to Mount Tianmeng, becoming a shield for Ma Yiwen to block the PLA’s advance. Already suspected, Ma Yiwu further increased the doubts about him being a spy after he voluntarily requested to follow Ma Yiwen as a captive to Mount Tianmeng. After Ma Yiwu arrived on the mountain, he saw his long-lost university girlfriend, Song Yiqin, but she had now become his sister-in-law and had a son, Ma Xiaowen. Ma Yiwen wanted to let Ma Yiwu go down the mountain, but Ma Yiwu knew that his brother's feigned surrender was because of him; if he went down the mountain, he wouldn't be able to explain it to the organization, and he couldn't leave his captured comrades behind alone. Ma Yiwen believed that Ma Yiwu was unwilling to go down the mountain for Song Yiqin. In the middle of the night, when the brothers were alone for the first time, it ignited Ma Yiwu's hatred for his brother’s betrayal of his wife. Just as he was about to beat Ma Yiwen, Ma Yiwen pulled out a gun and aimed it at his younger brother. At that moment, Song Yiqin stood between them. Ma Yiwen, knowing his brother's hatred for him, handed the gun to Ma Yiwu, allowing him to shoot and kill him. This would resolve their personal vendetta and also alleviate the PLA’s suspicion of him as a spy. However, Ma Yiwu believed that the gun was empty, and Ma Yiwen removed a bullet from the chamber, telling his brother that this was the bullet he bought from Tibetan people in Xikang fifteen years ago. It was 1935 when Ma Yiwen’s father and Song Yiqin’s father had a deep feud. To save his father, Ma Yiwen had asked his younger brother to buy a revolver and twenty bullets. However, because the revolver was smoothbore, only one bullet remained from the twenty. This lone bullet had appeared multiple times over the past fifteen years, intensifying the hatred between the Ma and Song families as well as between the Ma brothers. Ma Yiwen’s feigned surrender prompted the PLA to accelerate their military preparations to encircle the Kuomintang forces on Mount Tianmeng. Only Mei Dashui still held hope for Ma Yiwu’s persuasion, as he deeply understood that his battle-hardened soldiers dreamed of returning home to reunite with their loved ones after victory. Meanwhile, the elderly in western Sichuan were also hoping their sons fighting for the Kuomintang on the mountain would return to help with farming. If they launched a forceful assault on Mount Tianmeng, many lives would be lost on both sides in this brutal battle. Mei Dashui found a way to notify Ma Yiwu that he was willing to be his introducer for joining the party. Thus, Ma Yiwu, suppressing his emotional pain while on the mountain, put aside personal grudges and worked on persuading his brother to surrender. The special commissioner sent by Taiwan, Mao Dahua, noticed the threat Ma Yiwu posed to Mount Tianmeng and tried everything to sabotage Ma Yiwu’s persuasion efforts. Ma Yiwen valued his son, Ma Xiaowen, the most. When Ma Xiaowen fell seriously ill with pneumonia due to being caught in the rain, Ma Yiwen asked Taiwan to air-drop emergency medicine, but what the plane brought him was an order for a decisive battle in western Sichuan and crates of ammunition. In a rush, Ma Yiwen wanted to exchange PLA prisoners for the medicine, but Mei Dashui said the Communists did not engage in exchanges. However, to save Ma Xiaowen, the PLA agreed to unconditionally send medicine and doctors up the mountain. To stop the PLA's medicine delivery, Mao Dahua ordered the remaining Kuomintang bandits along the route to intercept the medicine team, resulting in multiple casualties. At a critical moment, Mei Dashui released Ma Yiwu, who had been detained and interrogated by their army. Ma Yiwu finally delivered the medicine, stained with the blood of ten PLA soldiers, to Mount Tianmeng, saving Ma Xiaowen from the clutches of death. To prevent Ma Yiwen from surrendering the 183rd Division to the PLA, Mao Dahua resolved to blow up Mei Dashui’s command post alone, creating an illusion that Ma Yiwen was again feigning surrender, prompting a general attack on Mount Tianmeng before Ma Yiwen’s actual surrender. At the crucial moment, Ma Yiwu used that bullet, which had never fired, to detonate the explosives on Mao Dahua, causing a flock of white birds to soar into the sky amidst the explosion.
