The story of this drama starts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, spanning approximately over twenty years until the end of the 1990s. In 1977, the Beijing Northern University campus witnessed a lively scene unlike any other, where a group of "old three classes" who have endured life's hardships regained their long-lost desire for education, ready to rewrite a fragmented history of their youthful past. With their unique life experiences and vibrant passion for life, they took this as a starting point to continuously recognize and discover themselves, seeking and realizing their ideals, thus becoming the backbone of today's society as "Class of '77" and "Class of '78". This ensemble drama is rich in Beijing's regional cultural characteristics, making it difficult to distill a complete story or plot from it. The script focuses on how their vastly different personalities and behaviors unfold meaningful lives. You may not find such a "ragtag army" at the start of school enrollment again. Firstly, the one wearing a yellow coat strides in, hurriedly portraying himself as a professional sociologist, although he hails from a typical royal family with a comical older brother deeply immersed in Beijing's culture. He is dismissive of the outdated habits and attitudes of the old elite, and changes his name to Ding Yifu to demonstrate his self-awareness. He spends his life contemplating issues pertinent to humanity: population control, desert management, energy shortages, etc. He relentlessly pursues his mission, even at the cost of parting ways with his wife, yet his pure attitude toward life and unwavering pursuit of ideals earn him smiles from others, as he also flavors life and evokes a sense of hope for the future. We see a group of optimistic ordinary people: Cao Jiajun, witty and humorous; He Yi, who has suffered emotional trauma but remains steadfast and resilient; Suo Ming, a child of privilege whose life missteps led to a transformation of his worldview, becoming more mature and tolerant; and rural student Tian Laoer, who, with two pigtails of garlic, enters school amidst extreme financial difficulties, overcoming challenges with a simple, optimistic spirit that touches those around him. Through betting on his marriage, Gu Yu believes in changing his fate solely through his own efforts; and Shan Zhong, kind and virtuous, cherishes her deceased husband and maintains a deep affection for the "Northeast Wilderness" because her husband is forever tied to that land where they began their life chapter... Alongside these individuals closely related to life and fate are others who have never experienced the turbulence their counterparts did; these "old three classes" are indelibly marked by their experiences but are ardent devotees and inheritors of Beijing's regional culture. They fully appreciate life, benefiting the common people, and present distinct color and character that shine in an otherwise ordinary existence. The drama revitalizes a courtyard beneath the Emperor's feet, reflecting the two brothers' admiration, pursuit, and obsession with Beijing's culture.
