In the late 1980s, a remote mountain village in northern China. The girl Xiaohua (played by Qi Ruyi) loses her parents and grandmother one after another, becoming an orphan. Although she is adopted by the village head and a family, she endures a humiliating life filled with tears. Out of desperation, she escapes from her birthplace, Shanghe Village. When she reaches the vicinity of Shaoyao Village, Xiaohua collapses from fatigue and hunger, and is saved by a passing villager. Though the villagers pity her as a wild child, they are unwilling to adopt her for fear of adding to their already heavy burdens. The elderly Baozhu Dad (played by Tian Chengren) is a kind-hearted man who, worried that the already frail Xiaohua might suffer further harm, secretly brings her home against the objections of Baozhu (played by Yu Weijie) and his daughter-in-law Xiangcao (played by Hao Yang). The two, unrelated by blood, begin their life together. Xiangcao, unable to bear children, views Xiaohua as a source of resentment, but no matter how hard-hearted she tries to be, she cannot resist being gradually melted by the warmth and tears of this exceptionally understanding and kind girl.
