In the 1920s and 1930s, Shanghai became the largest city in the Far East. Gradually, the surrounding small towns were also influenced by this foreign culture. The young people in the town began to leave home, some going to Shanghai to study and practice their skills, while others went abroad. They brought new ideas and stirred up new currents of thought in the small town. The story begins against this backdrop of changing times, where the grievances of the past subtly transform in the lives of the younger generation... Zhang family is a traditional family in Nanxiang, owning the largest restaurant in the town—Rihua Pavilion Steamed Bun Restaurant. Zhang Yanzu, the only son of the Zhang family, is a new-style youth who returned from studying abroad. He is ambitious and determined to write "The History of Folk Customs in Jiangnan" to promote national spirit, which deeply displeases his father, who wishes for him to continue the family's business. The father and son are at odds. The Li family is the owner of the most famous liquor, the Tulip Restaurant. Their only daughter, Xianglan, is a well-known beauty in the town, having studied in Shanghai. She is quite progressive in her thoughts, willful and headstrong, which gives her father, Li Ruiding, a headache. Xianglan's brother, Xingbao, is a notorious bully in the town. Due to past grievances, the Zhang and Li families do not associate with each other. However, the love between their children stirs up a great uproar. During the Dragon Boat Festival in Nanxiang, while everyone is enjoying the festivities, the two young lovers elope. Faced with opposition, Yanzu bravely faces death to defend their love, and finally Xianglan threatens to take her life, leading them to escape to Shanghai. Life in Shanghai, though romantic, cannot conceal the conflicts brought about by poverty. To support Yanzu in writing, Xianglan has to work in a song-and-dance hall, which leads to misunderstandings and ultimately, Yanzu fleeing during their wedding, being taken back to Nanxiang by Wang Xi, who was sent to retrieve him. Yanzu, who is determined to bring "Folk Customs History" to the West, continually dreams of returning to England, while his father threatens him with the loss of his manuscript to force him into marriage. In the meantime, Wang Xi, who has always loved Yue'e, is shocked to discover that she is Yanzu's bride. When it comes to family feuds and personal relations, Wang Xi chooses the former, stepping onto a path of no return. A series of revenge by Wang Xi causes the Zhang family to fall apart, and Yue'e pretends to divorce Yanzu to save him. Her declaration of righteousness finally moves Yanzu’s heart, and he begins to love his wife. Young Master Hou, who had a marriage agreement with the Li family, colludes with Wang Xi to deceive Yue’e, who desperately wants to help Yanzu publish his book, into pawning the family heirloom—the Nanxiang Scripture Pillar. Upon realizing that this has led to the downfall of the family, Wang Xi smirks with satisfaction. As time passes, Xianglan discovers that she still loves Yanzu and decides to risk everything to steal the Scripture Pillar. The two flee to a foreign land. In exile, Yanzu hears of Yue’e’s suicide and is devastated. In reality, Yue’e is not dead; she has given birth to Xiuxiu, reopened Rihua Pavilion, and has managed to survive with great resilience. Just as Yanzu finishes his manuscript and prepares to return to Nanxiang, a bomb destroys Rihua Pavilion, along with Yanzu’s manuscript. Yue’e witnesses everything, heartbroken. Seasons change, and after eight years of the Anti-Japanese War, Xiuxiu has grown up, unaware that her "father" Wang Xi is actually the enemy of the Zhang family, while her beloved Chinese literature teacher is her real father. Xianglan, who is gravely ill, wishes to marry Yanzu properly, but this desire cannot be fulfilled due to Hou’s scheming. To rescue Xianglan from prison, Yanzu spares no effort, even risking the Scripture Pillar. It is then revealed that the Scripture Pillar they fought over was a fake, while the real one is secretly placed in a music box by Wang Xi, gifted to Xiuxiu. Yanzu finally learns the truth about Xiuxiu’s background and engages in a "man-to-man conversation" with Wang Xi. He vows to rescue Xianglan and fulfill her lifelong wish, while Wang Xi and Yue’e should start anew. However, danger is quietly approaching. The gangsters, led by Hou, set a trap for Yanzu and the others to fight for the Scripture Pillar. As gunfire erupts, past grievances turn to ashes. Yanzu takes Xiuxiu and flees to another land. Fifty years later, they return to Nanxiang, donate the Scripture Pillar, and burn his "History of Folk Customs in Jiangnan" at the graves of the two women intertwined with his life, completing his lifelong wish: love and manuscript.
