Shanghai, China in the 1930s. It had the world's most advanced scientific achievements of the time as well as superstitions that had persisted for thousands of years. Many became wealthy overnight, while others faced disgrace and took dangerous risks. It was a time when the general public was lost in their daily struggles, making it the perfect breeding ground for bizarre occurrences. The protagonist, Cheng Sihan, solves mysteries that ordinary people cannot comprehend through detective reasoning and scientific methods. This illustrates that bold hypotheses and careful verification through science are the nemesis of ignorance and superstition. The series is divided into ten short stories, each with two episodes. The characters are interconnected, yet each story stands alone. It can be considered as ten series...
(1) The Eternal Life Hotel (Jasmine Fragrance)
A legendary place that allegedly solves life and death issues for individuals. Those who go there either seek to prolong their lives or to help end a life (their own or someone else's). The richest man in Shanghai, Deng Liren, once admitted in front of friends that he had been there several times, though always to end others' lives. However, all the deceased suffered from illnesses, and there was no evidence of murder. In the end, he received an invitation from the Eternal Life Hotel and thus was murdered. Reporter Ding Hong risked her life to report on the story, which also put her in danger. The infamous Prince of Thieves became the prime suspect, but Cheng Sihan ultimately unraveled the mystery of Deng Liren and others' disappearances, gaining the loyalty of the Prince of Thieves in the process.
(2) Dinosaur Eggs
Dinosaur eggs on display at the history museum were stolen, with evidence suggesting that these millennia-old fossils still had traces of life. Not long after, rumors spread of dinosaurs appearing, along with horrific incidents of dismemberment and property destruction, all attributed to the dinosaurs. This caused citywide panic among the citizens. Using his exceptional wit and extensive knowledge, along with the assistance of Ding Hong and the Prince, Cheng Sihan managed to uncover the truth behind the prehistoric creatures' reappearance.
(3) The Goddess of Vengeance
A film titled "The Goddess of Vengeance" created quite a stir. Many viewers experienced depression after watching it. The Knife Gang and the Xuhui Gang clashed violently to take control of Sixteen Piers. They decided to hold a contest for the title of Gambling King. In an attempt for the Gambling King Long Batian to make a comeback, Shanghai experienced a bloody turmoil. Fortunately, Cheng Sihan uncovered Long Batian's secret to winning every bet through magic, preventing a massacre in the city.
(5) The Twin Heirs
The wealthy Chen Zhenghao's last wish was for his son Chen Qianshan to locate his long-lost twin brother Chen Wanshui in order to inherit his fortune. The day after Chen Wanshui was found, Chen Qianshan unexpectedly died. Besides inheriting all the wealth, Chen Wanshui began a romantic relationship with his brother’s fiancée. Suddenly, another man claiming to be the real Chen Wanshui appeared, asserting that the previously found brother was an imposter and the one who murdered the elder brother, turning the situation upside down. Without Cheng Sihan’s intervention, the mystery would never have been solved.
(6) Mad Dog
Mad Dog is not a canine, but a notorious enforcer in Shanghai. Once someone offends him, he unleashes his wrath like a rabid dog, showing no mercy. Monthly, there are victims of his assaults, but apart from the signs of dog bites, no other evidence remains. Cheng Sihan, however, discovered a tragic story behind Mad Dog's killings—he was merely a pawn, manipulated by someone pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

Oddly, her voice seemed to be possessed by her sister. All clues pointed toward a conspiracy between her manager and her sister. At this moment, Cheng Sihan located the singer, proving she was alive. However, her sister had been disfigured. Why did such a tragedy occur? Why did the singer go missing? The process was truly astonishing.

This time, Cheng Sihan found himself implicated in a murder case. He was discovered holding the murder weapon, alongside the victim, both fainting in a room together. The victim was someone who had previously posed threats to Cheng Sihan. Furthermore, Cheng was found to be a drug user, with all evidence leaning against him, even he himself admitted that, based on the evidence, it was enough to convict him. Although he was imprisoned, with the help of Ding Hong and the Prince, Cheng Sihan eventually cleared his name and resolved to confront Shanghai’s underground emperor.

In the end, Cheng Sihan found sufficient evidence to prove that Boss Tong was the mastermind behind Shanghai's crimes, leading Inspector Li to bring him to justice. Boss Tong died by self-immolation.
