This is a classic story reflecting the struggles, hardships, contradictions, confusions, introspection, and the difficult exploration of life’s value of contemporary Chinese people during the dramatic social, economic, and ideological changes and conflicts from the late 1970s to the late 1990s. At the same time, the drama showcases the essence of human nature's purity and the intense struggle for life, revealing the multifaceted and complex aspects of humanity. It presents a panoramic "tragedy-comedy of human life." The drama unfolds through nearly twenty years of emotional entanglement between Ma Qi, a history professor at a university, and Ding Xiaoli, a girl who dropped out of school in the mountains. While promoting the "A Xin" spirit characterized by tenacity and resilience of ordinary people like Ding Xiaoli in facing life and love, it depicts with a sympathetic and objective lens the turbulent life of a typical Chinese intellectual, Ma Qi, in the context of reform and opening up, from physical to spiritual oscillation. Spanning from the restoration of the college entrance examination in 1978 to the end of the 20th century, it probes into the confusions and dilemmas faced by various social classes and interpersonal relationships, as well as their decisions amidst conflicts arising from family and career, through the experiences of an intellectual. The male lead, played by Tang Guoqiang, is named Ma Qi. He is a history professor at a university, divorced, and has a child. Due to his unfortunate experience with marriage, he harbors a distrust towards love, marriage, and life. To relieve stress, he goes to the mountains for research, where he unexpectedly encounters a poor girl, Ding Xiaoli (played by Xie Lan), who has a strong desire to study. With his help, she leaves the mountains to work while auditing classes at the university. Ultimately, she passes the adult college entrance examination and becomes a journalist. Discontent with the rigid teaching system at his school, Ma Qi eventually leaves the campus, ventures into business in Hainan, and ends up together with Ding Xiaoli…
