In 1925, after the turmoil in Northeast China had just ceased, Fengling Town by the Songhua River was located deep within the mountains and rivers, home to a complex mix of people from various professions and social standings. The Ma and Feng families in Fengling Town had a longstanding feud. The patriarchs of both families were nearing the end of their lives, and Mr. Feng wanted to find a wife for his mentally challenged son, Feng Lizi, before he passed away. Feng Lizi was infatuated with Heiguo, the daughter of Mr. Zhou, a teacher in town, but Mr. Zhou had promised Heiguo to Ma Wanhai, the son of Mr. Ma. After graduating from medical school, Ma Wanhai was forced to enlist in the army. Upon receiving a letter from his father, he devised a plan to escape back from Fengtian and, upon learning of the feud, secretly colluded with the bandit Xiao Beifeng to raid the Feng family, leading to their downfall. Soon after, both Mr. Feng and Mr. Ma passed away, and Feng Lizi's condition unexpectedly improved. It turned out that he had been pretending to be foolish to avoid disaster. Although Ma Wanhai had ruined the Feng family, he too lost all his wealth. Afterwards, Feng and Ma families separately took in the orphans Ben'er and Qiu'er. The childhood friends Ben'er and Qiu'er caused immense trouble for the feuding Feng Lizi and Ma Wanhai. When the Japanese army invaded, Colonel Ozaki stationed his troops in Fengling Ferry. He appeared polite and cultured, but immediately implemented brutal policies, forcing assimilation education and executing teacher Mr. Zhou. Heiguo, seeking revenge for her nation's grievances, joined Xiao Beifeng's bandits. Influenced by Heiguo's anti-Japanese spirit, the brothers under Xiao Beifeng elected her as their leader. Feng Lizi and Ma Wanhai were also compelled to join the mountains due to Ozaki's pressure. Although Feng Lizi and Ma Wanhai did not publicly resist the Japanese, they secretly competed against each other. They used various tactics against Colonel Ozaki, making him a laughingstock. Despite Ozaki's repeated attempts to capture them, Feng Lizi and Ma Wanhai engaged in a battle of wits and skills, not only evading capture but also repeatedly sabotaging his plans, which led to dissatisfaction from his superiors. The courageous acts of Feng Lizi and Ma Wanhai against the Japanese became a local legend. Commander He of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army hoped to develop their influence into a formal resistance unit, but the two had reservations about joining. With no way to confront the Japanese army directly, they ultimately joined the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army alongside Heiguo. Ozaki schemed to capture the three of them, but even in prison, he was unable to make them surrender after exhausting all methods. In desperation, Ozaki forced Ma Wanhai to shoot Feng Lizi, but Ma Wanhai had previously discovered that Feng Lizi's heart was on the right side and chose to help him escape danger. Although Feng Lizi survived a near-fatal ordeal, he was severely injured. Heiguo and Ma Wanhai risked their lives to take Feng Lizi to a hospital in Harbin. Ma Wanhai performed surgery on Feng Lizi, and while the doctor was changing Feng's bandages, he learned that his heart was on the right side. Ma Wanhai, who knew this secret, saved his life in a crisis, leaving Feng Lizi feeling deeply guilty towards him. As the Anti-Japanese United Army fell into dire straits, Commander He heroically sacrificed himself, and the army disbanded. The Japanese army conducted brutal sweeps on Yanchuan Mountain and the peaks of Feng Lizi and Ma Wanhai. Under the tyranny of Ozaki, Ben'er became a traitor, only to be killed by the woman who loved him, Qiu'er. Heiguo was captured and died with great dignity. Soon, Ozaki found many steel helmets of missing Japanese soldiers at Heiguo's grave, laughing maniacally in front of the tomb… Finally, Ozaki was driven into madness by Feng Lizi and Ma Wanhai's harassment, acting erratically in the barracks. He was reassigned and sent back to Japan. Riding a horse across the snowy fields, he suddenly saw two horses galloping through the snow, which turned out to be Feng Lizi and Ma Wanhai singing the Kanto folk song "The Great Divide"…
