In 1925, after the turmoil in Northeast China had just ceased, Fengling Town by the Songhua River was located deep within the mountains and rivers, home to a complex mix of people from various professions and social standings. The Ma and Feng families in Fengling Town had a longstanding feud. The patriarchs of both families were nearing the end of their lives, and Mr. Feng wanted to find a wife for his mentally challenged son, Feng Lizi, before he passed away. Feng Lizi was infatuated with Heiguo, the daughter of Mr. Zhou, a teacher in town, but Mr. Zhou had promised Heiguo to Ma Wanhai, the son of Mr. Ma.
