In the autumn and winter of 1946, the struggle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party had reached a very tense level in the Central Plains. Zhou Xiaofeng, then a major general and commander of the Kuomintang's 349th Brigade, was actually an underground party member directly appointed by Yan'an, with a single-line connection. His task was to incite an uprising among the new 9th Army led by Guo Jinqiu, but unexpectedly, under the leadership of another group of underground party members, the 349th Brigade initiated the uprising ahead of schedule when the enemy attacked our Tongniu Military District. This group of underground party members was tasked by the military district's enemy work department. Zhou Xiaofeng felt puzzled about the timing of the 349th Brigade's uprising but could not prevent it, and thus, he participated in the uprising as if he were being coerced and withdrew from the battlefield, being reassigned to the central area of the Tongniu Military District for reorganization. Subsequent developments proved that the uprising of the 349th Brigade was indeed significant. Led by Chief of Staff Jiao and with 24 underground party members, they were ambushed by the enemy while heading to a military district meeting, resulting in all of them sacrificing their lives. This was part of the enemy's conspiracy, under the planning of the enemy “Wolf” hiding within our party, leading to the demise of all underground party members of the 349th Brigade, which had not yet been reorganized, effectively returning it to the Kuomintang forces. Its future was entirely determined by Zhou Xiaofeng’s personal preferences. The military intelligence not only had assassins buried beside Zhou Xiaofeng but also activated a special operations team to infiltrate the vicinity of Meiren Pass. The leader, Lin Xuefei, had been Zhou Xiaofeng's child bride; she loved him yet could not attain him, leading to a complex mix of love and hate. The “Wolf” was intimately aware of his actions, knowing that should he side with the Communist Party, he would immediately face death. Minister Meng of the enemy work department in the military district was unaware of Zhou Xiaofeng's identity as a Communist Party member and ordered the new political commissar Wang Xiaonong and Director of the Political Department Xia Ying to execute him immediately if any signs of returning to the Kuomintang were detected. Consequently, a guard platoon was sent to protect the 349th Brigade headquarters. Xia Ying harbored personal grudges against him, creating both suspicion and difficulties for him; to make matters worse, at this time, the young daughter of the traitor Yi Bingchuan, Yi Zhimei, whom Zhou Xiaofeng had killed during the war, had returned seeking revenge. In addition to being enemies, she was also the only woman Zhou Xiaofeng cared for, being the younger sister of his deceased wife, Yi Zhilan! Thus, Zhou Xiaofeng found himself trapped in a heavy crisis of national hatred, family grievances, and entangled emotions. Zhou Xiaofeng was acutely aware of the dangers he faced. Tasked with inciting an uprising from more than 30,000 men of the new 9th Army, he could not discern whether the people around him were friend or foe. The only ones in the military district who could trust and obey Chief of Staff Jiao and, during tense times, deploy all underground party members for action were Commander Zhang and Political Commissar Chen, and was “Wolf” one of them? Doubts even reached Yan'an; thus, they could not disclose Zhou Xiaofeng's true identity and mission to the military district. Xiangfeng had to fight alone, treading on thin ice, concealing his identity while preventing the enemy from discovering him and the military district from misunderstanding his intentions, all the while tracing and eliminating the "Wolf," clarifying the enemy's conspiracy, and evading and resolving Yi Zhimei's pursuit of revenge to protect Wang Xiaonong and Xia Ying in the 349th Brigade; the challenges he faced were undoubtedly formidable. In this situation, the only help and understanding he could gain came from his secretary, Liu Fangxia, another underground party member sent from Yan'an, who eventually pretended to be his wife for convenience in communication. Zhou Xiaofeng felt deep gratitude and a sense of indebtedness towards her. Unexpectedly, the course of the war took a turn when the new 9th Army and enemy 78th Army, totaling 70,000 men, laid siege to our Zhang-Chen brigade of only 20,000, placing the stationed 349th Brigade at a critical juncture. Both the enemy and our side recognized the importance of the 349th Brigade and exerted all efforts to win it over. The chips available to Nanjing included limitless wealth and high ranks, while the Communist Party had no money or positions to offer, only the support of the people and their spirit. This was indeed a trap set by the “Wolf.” The enemy threatened and enticed, believing victory was within their grasp. Faced with such a crucial juncture, Zhou Xiaofeng displayed extraordinary wisdom and courage, leading all officers and soldiers of the brigade to stand with the Communist Party, identifying and eliminating the infiltrated enemy “Wolf,” wiping out the enemy intelligence organization, allowing the Communist forces to take the initiative, causing Nanjing to harbor a deep-seated hatred towards him, wishing to eliminate him as soon as possible. Zhou Xiaofeng sought to fundamentally change the situation in the war and, together with Wang Xiaonong, approached the new 9th Army to urge its commander Guo Jinqiu to rise in rebellion. Unfortunately, they were betrayed by his friend, military chief of staff Tian Dan. To protect Guo Jinqiu, Zhou Xiaofeng and Wang Xiaonong were captured by the enemy and sent to Nanjing, where they remained resolute and unyielding, ultimately being executed at the Yuhuatai in Nanjing. Their arrest and sacrifice ultimately solidified Guo Jinqiu's decision to lead the entire new 9th Army in rebellion, transforming the Communist forces from an overwhelming disadvantage of 20,000 into a decisive advantage of 60,000 against the Kuomintang's 30,000, annihilating the enemy and solidifying the blood of martyrs as a triumph of the revolution, becoming a monumental achievement in the success of the Chinese revolution.
