During the Tang Dynasty, in the Kaiyuan period, Prince Kim Kyo-gyeok of the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla faced a palace upheaval where family turned against family, resulting in the tragic death of his mother. Heartbroken over his wife's disappearance, he renounced the secular world to become a monk. In search of the true teachings of Buddhism, he sailed to Tang China for learning and eventually arrived at Mount Jiuhua to establish a temple and promote Buddhist teachings. His wife, having narrowly escaped death, endured great hardships to reach China, but they were fated to meet yet unable to be together. To fulfill Kim Kyo-gyeok's aspirations, she resolutely threw herself into a well in a tragic act of devotion. After enduring life’s hardships, Kim Kyo-gyeok ultimately attained the highest realm he sought, becoming the revered "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva," and Mount Jiuhua consequently became a sacred site of Buddhism.
