A revolutionary era, a restless youth era, a burning passion era, an age of fervor and reflection. In 1949, with the founding of New China, a monumental change in the times commenced, igniting years of tumultuous passion… Soldier Zhao Baotian and his wife Bai Xiufeng moved into a small Western-style building in Shanghai with their unit; the owner had long fled, and that day capitalist Liu Dekang came to bribe them… The next day, a mysterious safe was discovered… As the anti-rightist campaign began, tenant Xu Yi was labeled a rightist for expressing a few shared sentiments with Wang Zhicheng and was sent to the countryside to raise pigs; as the state called for everyone to make steel, Lu Dajiang's son Lu Gen resorted to stealing Yan Shipeng's kettle and Ma Lin's Tang dynasty copper mirror due to his inability to gather enough scrap iron, causing a rift between the couple… During the three years of natural disasters, in an effort to celebrate her son's birthday far away in a foreign land, Ding Menghuan exhausted her resources to buy a cake, but a missing corner of a 50-cent coin led to her reckless theft of the cake… The unprecedented Cultural Revolution began, impacting everyone in the building; anti-Japanese hero Zhou Dalü was labeled as a pawn of Deng, and Zhao Baotian was accused of being a capitalist roader, while Liu Dekang ended up living in a stable. Qian Lijuan declared a break with Zhou Dalü, and the youth in the building also went to the mountains and villages… In the blood-soaked decade, human nature twisted, couples turned against each other, brothers became enemies, and fathers and sons harmed one another… All the love, hatred, and enmity were renewed with the end of the Cultural Revolution… After 40 years of ups and downs, the era of reform and opening-up emerged, and all grudges turned to ashes with a single explosion…
