In Shanghai before dawn, prominent figures from all walks of life began to respond to the Chinese Communist Party's democratic proposals, calling for an end to the Chiang family dynasty's authoritarian rule. As public sentiment swayed, the Nationalist Party's Ministry of National Defense's secret service, cornered like a trapped beast, accepted direct orders from Chiang Kai-shek, who was hiding behind the scenes in his hometown of Xikou, to concoct a "blacklist" targeting social celebrities that could not be publicly eliminated. Military Intelligence's Kunming station operative Huang Longjie was reassigned to form a special operations team codenamed "Lightning," launching a series of covert assassination activities. Therefore, Huang Longjie, under the guise of a pharmaceutical company representative, brought his wife and subordinates in batches to Shanghai, reporting to the Shanghai station chief Han Tianshi while simultaneously commencing operations. The underground party organization in Shanghai quickly detected this movement and decided to establish the "Dawn" task force, led by the seemingly influential businesswoman—who was actually an underground party member, Guo Jiayue, a single female manager at Zhongyang Trading Company, to execute protective missions. Wang Huaizhi, the director of an intelligence station disguised as a New Year painting workshop, served as the liaison for this group. "Dawn" made an immediate impact by completely annihilating the three key operatives directly brought from Kunming by Huang Longjie. This also drew Huang Longjie's attention, while he remained unaware of a special connection between him and Guo Jiayue—Huang Longjie's wife, Shen Huiyun, was a college friend of Guo Jiayue. In the struggle to protect and eliminate threats, Huang Longjie and Guo Jiayue engaged in a battle of wits, while their subordinates, Zhou Hailiang, Yang Fan, Xiao Feng, Tian Yu, and others, also showcased their skills, amidst a web of complex personal relationships.
