The September 18 Incident breaks out, and the border-guarding Gu family resists the Japanese army, facing annihilation. Gu family's adopted daughter Gu Xueying survives and heads to Qiqihar to find her fiancé Gu Zhaolong. Gu Zhaolong goes undercover as an officer in the puppet Manchukuo army, and Gu Xueying believes he has betrayed the country, determined to kill Gu Zhaolong to uphold family rules. Gu Xueying goes to Qianshan to join the anti-Japanese volunteer army and participates in the volunteer army's three battles in Harbin.
