In 1941, the Japanese occupied Shanghai and fully launched their invasion of China, leading to intensified suffering for the Chinese people. Numerous battles occurred during the Sino-Japanese war, and the Japanese captured many Chinese individuals, sending them in batches to prisoner camps. Each person in these camps represented a Chinese family on the brink of destruction, facing separation and loss, with families torn apart. During these suffering years, the Chinese people were displaced, but their will remained strong because they believed that victory would ultimately belong to them. On a stormy night at the Japanese prisoner camp, the Japanese soldiers were mobilized to pursue Wang Shirong, a Fujian anti-Japanese youth who had been rescued by Jiang Chuanxian, the second son of the Jiang family. Meanwhile, Jiang Chuanxian's wife Qiuxia was experiencing a difficult labor. With the help of Jiang Chuanzong's wife Xiuzhi and Jiang Chuanxiao's wife Fang Meilian, the child was finally born and named Yaozu. However, at that moment, Chuanxian was forced to go abroad as a laborer. Learning the details from his eldest daughter Xiaoyun, second daughter Xiaohui, and third son Yaoguang, Qiuxia, exhausted after a difficult labor, rushed to the riverbank where Chuanxian was about to be forced onto a ship, and after a painful farewell, she finally fainted from exhaustion. The originally peaceful family was forced apart, causing great sadness within the Jiang family. However, at this time, the third son Chuanxiao's wife Fang Meilian, wanting to protect herself, proposed a separation of the family to avoid sharing the burden of supporting Qiuxia and the four children. Xiuzhi, who had always had conflicts with Meilian, also agreed out of self-interest. Moreover, Chuanzong, who was generally submissive to his wife, supported Chuanxiao's decision. Though he opposed it vehemently, he had no choice but to accept it. As Qiuxia gradually recovered, she decided to be self-reliant and worked as a female laborer. During this time, she encountered Wang Shirong, who was injured while being pursued by the Japanese, and helped him escape. The two formed a bond, and while Shirong was grateful, he was unaware that Qiuxia was actually the wife of his savior. Meilian and her first love Cheng Gang were having an affair at home when they were caught by Qiuxia. To prevent the truth from coming out, Meilian colluded with Cheng Gang to falsely accuse Qiuxia of infidelity, leaving Qiuxia with no defense. Qiuxia was brutally expelled from the Jiang family and was forced to separate from her four children. Seizing the opportunity, Meilian proposed splitting the family assets and sending Qiuxia's four children to others. Xiuzhi, fond of the fourth child Yaozu, suggested that as long as Yaozu was left behind, she would agree to everything. The conversation was overheard by Xiaohui and Yaoguang, and the siblings secretly set off to find their mother but accidentally got separated at the train station. Xiaoyun, following a note left by Xiaohui, arrived at the train station but found nothing and was instead deceived by human traffickers and sold to a brothel owner named Feng Zhu. Xiaoyun suffered immense torment but was helped several times by Feng Zhu's nephew Ge Ming, though she was still forced into a life of degradation. Meanwhile, Meilian, determined to seize the entire Jiang family fortune, instigated Cheng Gang to make Yaozu disappear. Cheng Gang, feeling soft-hearted, abandoned Yaozu in the outskirts, where he was taken in by a scavenger who happened to pass by and renamed him A Ding. Thus, Qiuxia's four children were scattered far and wide! Upon receiving the news of her children's disappearance, Qiuxia hurried back to the Jiang family with a glimmer of hope, searching for her children. On the way, she encountered Cheng Gang, but in her eagerness to find her son, Qiuxia did not recognize him. Instead, feeling guilty, Cheng Gang, fearing that Qiuxia might recognize him, pushed her off a cliff. Qiuxia suffered a severe head injury and was fortunately rescued by Wang Shirong, who took her to a hospital. However, upon waking, Qiuxia found that she had lost all her memories and could only hysterically ask about her children, eventually being forcibly sent to an asylum! After losing contact with Qiuxia, the conflict between Meilian and Xiuzhi escalated. Under the instigation of their respective wives, Chuanzong and Chuanxiao finally turned against each other and separated the family. At this time, Meilian and Cheng Gang's affair was discovered by Chuanxiao, who, in a fit of rage, suffered a stroke. Mercilessly, Meilian abandoned her husband outside Chuanzong's house and left with all the family's assets to elope with Cheng Gang! Six years later, Qiuxia remained locked in the asylum, visited only by Shirong, who developed feelings for her over time. One stormy night, thunder and lightning triggered memories for Qiuxia. Shirong not only took Qiuxia away from the asylum, but he also promised to take care of her, leading them to become close friends. Upon returning to the Jiang family, Qiuxia discovered that everything had changed. Chuanzong had amassed huge gambling debts and had fled with Xiuzhi, while Chuanxiao had been sent to a nursing home. Her four children had fallen silent. With Shirong's comfort and help, Qiuxia, initially heartbroken, resolved to embark on a long journey to find her lost children. During this time, Xiaoyun blossomed into a beautiful woman, renamed Xianglan by the brothel owner, and was forced to start entertaining clients. Xianglan (Xiaoyun) resisted desperately, but was confined. Ge Ming took advantage of the night to help Xianglan escape. Yearning for her mother, Xianglan decided to work while searching for news about her mother and siblings. The second daughter, Xiaohui, was adopted by a family with the surname Li and renamed Li Yujuan. Deeply believing that her mother had indeed been unfaithful, Li Yujuan (Xiaohui) insisted on erasing her past identity. The third son, Yaoguang, was adopted by a wealthy merchant and renamed Gao Tianci. Spoiled excessively, Tianci (Yaoguang) became stubborn and rebellious, and after associating with some bad elements, he fell into a life of crime, resembling a little gangster. The fourth son, Yaozu, lived a poor life with the scavenger who took him in, but the small A Ding (Yaozu) was very well-behaved and understanding. However, the old woman became critically ill and before dying, entrusted A Ding (Yaozu) to a distant relative Jin Shui, who made a living by performing arts. Jin Shui then took A Ding (Yaozu) around to make a living. One day, while with A Ding, Jin Shui got into a dispute with Shirong and Qiuxia during A Ding's high fever. Seeing that A Ding was the same age as her younger son Yaozu, Qiuxia took care of him carefully, and during this process, the bond between the two became very close, almost like mother and son, though Qiuxia was unaware that A Ding was her long-missed son Yaozu! Jin Shui was also moved by Qiuxia's determination to find her children and agreed to help, leading the four to travel together. Meanwhile, Tianci was being bullied by some delinquent youths when Li Yujuan stepped in to help, and from this moment on, the two became good friends, although Tianci had no idea that Li Yujuan was actually his second sister Xiaohui! Friends through fights, Jin Shui and Shirong became good buddies but fell for Qiuxia at the same time. Shirong's father and Tianci's adoptive father were former business partners, leading Qiuxia to meet Tianci. From the token Tianci had, Qiuxia discovered that he was actually her third son Yaoguang! At first, Tianci misunderstood that his mother had remarried, viewing him as her own. His adoptive parents also refused to return him to Qiuxia. However, in the end, Qiuxia's deep maternal love moved everyone, and Tianci was the first to recognize her, becoming friends with her. Li Yujuan also realized that Qiuxia was her biological mother, and Qiuxia learned that Li Yujuan was her second daughter Xiaohui. However, rebellious and vain, Xiaohui insisted on not acknowledging her mother. At this time, Xianglan was captured and returned to the brothel while Qiuxia discovered that Xianglan was her eldest daughter Xiaoyun! Initially, Qiuxia struggled to accept that her daughter had fallen into such disgraceful circumstances, but with Ge Ming’s help, the mother and daughter were finally reunited. Qiuxia, Shirong, and Jin Shui gathered money to redeem Xianglan, only to hear that she had been sold to a wealthy merchant, who was actually Cheng Gang, the very man responsible for Qiuxia’s separation from her children and her loss of memory, leading her to the asylum! After successfully establishing his business, Cheng Gang wanted to take Xianglan as his concubine without realizing that she was Qiuxia’s eldest daughter, triggering jealousy and murderous intent from Fang Meilian... With three of her children found, Qiuxia worried about the whereabouts of her fourth son, unaware that A Ding, now named Yaozu, was right by her side. At this moment, the long-lost Chuanxian, along with his wife, returned to the country. After many years of infertility, Chuanxian planned to take Qiuxia’s children away. Having just experienced the pain of losing her husband, could Qiuxia face the prospect of losing her children once more? Where would her affections lie amidst the pursuits of Jin Shui and Shirong? When would Qiuxia discover that A Ding was her son Yaozu? The hardships of the era triggered this calamity of family—"The Calamity of Family"!
