In the summer, the security team's special agents from the border area were escorting a central leader (Zhou Enlai) to Xi'an for negotiations when their truck was suddenly ambushed by bandits, resulting in the sacrifice of many soldiers and the leader narrowly escaping disaster. This unexpected event left Li Mu, the head of the Central Intelligence Department, both angry and shocked, ordering the head of the border security department, Zhou Jin, to solve the case within a specified time. Zhou Jin, feeling utterly ashamed, vowed to root out the enemy agents behind this incident; otherwise, he would pack up and raise pigs. The mastermind behind this attack was Chen Jiyuan, a spy from the anti-Communist National Salvation Army's underground station in Shaanxi. Coming from a prestigious family, he was handsome, intelligent, and courageous, but unfortunately, he was misguided and a staunch follower of Wang Jingwei. Although the attack did not harm the Communist leaders, Chen Jiyuan still promoted and rewarded Li Qingwu, the local gang elder responsible for this attack, as promised, causing Li Qingwu to beam with delight. Zhou Jin and Deputy Director Wang Bin disguised themselves as investigators in the urban area and quickly uncovered hidden informants in the city. It turned out that one of these informants pretended to be a sweet potato vendor who had sensed that the security department might be escorting a central leader. Zhou Jin decided to lure the snake out of its hole and eliminate the bandits in one fell swoop! At this moment, a female soldier named Yanxi reported to the security department as per Li Mu's orders. Zhou Jin, who usually underestimated women, was greatly angered and yelled for her to leave. In a fit of anger, Yanxi truly walked out. Zhou Jin was later scolded by Li Mu, and upon learning that Yanxi was a university student majoring in radio, Zhou Jin reluctantly admitted his mistake and took Yanxi back, assigning her to monitor the radio station, to which Yanxi complied with a smile. In contrast to Zhou Jin, the security department had always been composed entirely of men. Thus, the appearance of Yanxi, a beautiful female university student, naturally stirred ripples throughout the entire security department. Nearby shops were sold out of tooth powder, and the pre-meal roll call and singing were unusually loud, making Zhou Jin frequently praise everyone's spirit. Mao Xuyuan, the head of the anti-Communist National Salvation Army's underground station in Shaanxi, came to supervise Chen Jiyuan in Ganquan. Mao Xuyuan trusted and appreciated Chen Jiyuan immensely; they were not only teacher and student but also close friends. When Mao Xuyuan saw Chen Jiyuan studying Marxist-Leninist works earnestly, particularly being able to recite the "Communist Manifesto" fluently while providing profound interpretations, he felt even more admiration. Chen Jiyuan declared that he was doing all this to one day infiltrate Yan'an. Mao Xuyuan was thrilled, as this aligned with a plan he brought along: to send someone to infiltrate Yan'an and assassinate the highest leader of the CCP (Mao Zedong)! Initially, Mao Xuyuan did not intend for his beloved subordinate to carry out this nearly impossible task, but he was eventually swayed by Chen Jiyuan's determination and saw hope for success. At that moment, intelligence from another source indicated that the security department was preparing to "lure the snake out of its hole and annihilate the bandits," leading Mao and Chen to decide to use this to their advantage, sacrificing Li Qingwu's bandit group as a cover to confuse the security department and facilitate Chen Jiyuan's entry into Yan'an. At Yanxi's insistence, and to make her aware of the horrors of war, Zhou Jin specially assigned guard Li Mantun to fully protect Yanxi during the anti-bandit combat. Unexpectedly, in the battle, not only did Yanxi show no fear, but she also turned out to be a sharpshooter, saving Li Mantun from enemy gunfire at a crucial moment, much to the astonishment of the men in the security department, and Zhou Jin found it hard to believe. However, Wang Bin sensed something was off and reminded Zhou Jin that this woman did not seem like someone sent by the higher-ups to be a radio monitor. Sure enough, after the combat concluded, Yanxi received her official appointment—Deputy Director of the security department, while Wang Bin was reassigned to work in the enemy-occupied area. Zhou Jin was astounded. Although he knew by this point that Yanxi, a radio prodigy from Nanjing Central University, not only had ample experience in underground work but also had researched various spy knowledge due to foreign teachers, he remained resistant to being assigned a female partner. Yanxi, however, did not mind at all, juggling work, study, beauty, and romance seamlessly, causing Zhou Jin to frequently frown at her, while the other comrades in the security department were quite happy. While Chen Jiyuan was preparing to infiltrate Yan'an, another pair of Japanese spies, Kong Fan and Xiao Ying, had already arrived in Yan'an. Kong and Xiao were originally agents of the Soviet Red Army's intelligence team, trained in the Soviet Union before being sent to Shenyang in the Japanese-occupied area to gather intelligence for the Soviet Red Army while also maintaining contact with the CCP. Shortly after, they were captured by the Japanese army, who threatened to force Xiao Ying into becoming a comfort woman, leading Kong Fan to betray his comrades. Subsequently, the couple used the excuse of coming to Yan'an to report to central command as a cover for gathering intelligence. Being from the same field, they were naturally received by the security department. Zhou Jin and Kong Fan had spent time in a short training class together and were instantly familiar with each other, frequently engaging in conversations. When they learned that Xiao Ying was pregnant, Zhou Jin proactively sought permission from his superiors for the couple to stay in Yan'an to have their child. During this time, Kong Fan continued to communicate with the Japanese army and pass on intelligence through poetry published in the "Liberation Daily." Yanxi's suspicion of Kong Fan was sparked by two poetry manuscripts that had been returned by the "Liberation Daily" to the security department, as this unusual hobby did not quite fit the profile of a spy, which intrigued her about Kong Fan's works. She gathered all of Kong Fan's published poems from the "Liberation Daily" and discovered signs of coded messages commonly used by spies. Although Zhou Jin was skeptical about such word games, he agreed to conduct further investigations into Kong and Xiao. The investigator Li Ran fell in love with Yanxi at first sight but did not dare to express it and took the initiative to volunteer for the investigation of Kong and Xiao. In truth, Xiao Ying had always disapproved of Kong Fan's act of betrayal but could not convince her husband. She also knew the fate of traitors all too well and could only hope to leave Yan'an quickly after giving birth, hoping to end this tormenting life soon. At this point, the Japanese army, having learned from reports that the couple had infiltrated Yan'an, intensified the training of their special forces, preparing to strike at the opportunity to send operatives into Yan'an to assassinate the highest leaders of the CCP...
