In June 1948, China was in a stalemate during the Liberation War, swaying between two different fates and futures. In June 1948, Pingxi had already been liberated by the Communist Party of China, becoming an important military station in Northeast China. However, due to the historical legacy of World War II, Pingxi was still nominally an internationally administered city. Thus, in this northern city with a Far Eastern flair, there were multiple powers including the Communist Military Management Committee, Soviet Army liaison office, and the American military observation post. In June 1948, millions of troops from the Kuomintang and the Communist Party were frequently mobilizing. However, Pingxi remained seemingly calm on the surface. With the arrival of an order, this brief calm was soon broken. Luo Jiang, the director of the social department of the Military Management Committee, received an order to welcome He Yingnong, a major general intelligence officer from the Kuomintang's Seventh Army Group, who was surrendering. He Yingnong brought with him the “Northeast Theater National Defense Strategy Plan,” which detailed the troop deployments and strategies of the Kuomintang forces in Northeast China. This strategic intelligence would determine the fate of the entire Northeast battlefield. With He Yingnong's arrival, various forces rapidly surged into Pingxi. The city of Pingxi then unfolded into a thrilling intelligence battle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. The outcome of this intelligence war was related to the fate of over a million troops in the entire Northeast region. From the moment Luo Jiang received the order, he faced a series of crises. Just as Luo Jiang arrived at the train station, his deputy Sun Du brought in an intercepted intelligence: the train station was filled with assassins, and he would face a meticulously planned assassination. Before he could set up a plan, the assassination attempt had already begun. Luo Jiang had to use extraordinary methods amidst the surrounding dangers to protect He Yingnong and help him leave the station safely. Once Luo Jiang and his team managed to secure He Yingnong and were ready to investigate the source of the intelligence, they discovered the body of an assassin in the street. The identity of the assassin was confirmed to be Lang De, a senior agent of the Kuomintang's military intelligence. Why Lang De died and who killed him became a mystery. All doubts pointed to one place: the Neva River Café. The Neva River Café was filled with special characters, including businessmen, Soviet military liaisons, American military observers, intelligence brokers, and politicians. It was a source of intelligence and rumors in Pingxi. The intelligence intercepted by Sun Du happened to come from the Neva River Café, delivered personally by the café's proprietress, Mei Ruojin. Mei Ruojin was worldly and maneuvered among various figures, striving to maintain a balance. On the same day Luo Jiang received the order to pick up He Yingnong, Mei Ruojin met her lover from sixteen years ago, Liang Zhicheng. Liang Zhicheng was now called Feng Boyuan. Sixteen years ago, Liang Zhicheng left Pingxi to participate in the War of Resistance and never returned. Upon his return, he was now a senior intelligence officer for the Kuomintang's military intelligence. He was tired of the civil war and planned to return to Pingxi to fly away with Mei Sister, leaving all the chaos behind. However, when he entered the Neva River Café, he found everything was not as he imagined. Things were far more complicated than he thought. Mei Ruojin was no longer the Mei Ruojin of the past, and Pingxi was no longer the Pingxi he once knew. Moreover, Feng Boyuan was quickly drawn into the intelligence war taking place in Pingxi. Social Department Director Luo Jiang, almost instinctively, swiftly pounced on Feng Boyuan. He kept a close watch on this former senior operative, making it difficult for Feng Boyuan to move freely in Pingxi. The latent military intelligence organization in Pingxi quickly made contact with Feng Boyuan. Just as Feng Boyuan was entangled in a crisis of emotions, politics, and conspiracies, the commission from the military intelligence also arrived. Feng Boyuan became the one to replace Lang De. He had no choice but to accept the task of assassinating He Yingnong; otherwise, the military intelligence would threaten Mei Ruojin's life. Thus, on the streets of Pingxi, filled with Far Eastern colors, in the bustling café, and in the internationally administered area of Pingxi, Luo Jiang and Feng Boyuan engaged in a competition with smiles on their faces. They appeared to be friendly, but their words were filled with cunning, and their actions were careful; a slight misstep could lead to fatal consequences. After all, this was an intelligence war that could impact the fate of over a million troops. Luo Jiang skillfully diverted everyone's attention to a secret transportation line. In the shadows, Luo Jiang displayed his brilliant imagination—he planned to use Soviet military planes to fly He Yingnong over the Kuomintang-controlled area, directly airlifting him to the front-line command. Feng Boyuan, seeing through the heavy smoke dispersed by Luo Jiang, finally identified a minor security flaw in the social department and deduced Luo Jiang's bold plan. Feng Boyuan decided to turn the tables and subtly set his assassination target on an unexpected link in Luo Jiang's plan—the pilot. At the moment the plane was about to take off, Luo Jiang uncovered Feng Boyuan's plan and drove a jeep toward the runway, intercepting the gliding plane... When the plane came to a heavy stop in the field, the pilot had already died from poisoning. He Yingnong sustained serious injuries in this flying accident and was hospitalized in Pingxi. Luo Jiang now faced an even greater crisis. He had to keep He Yingnong in Pingxi until his health recovered enough to proceed to the command forward. Meanwhile, Pingxi had already become unstable, becoming the primary target of the Kuomintang's forces. Pingxi was about to fall! A large retreat was about to begin. Luo Jiang had to ensure He Yingnong's safety during this large retreat. A series of assassination operations from military intelligence had already attracted the high attention of the commanding officers. The military intelligence organization would stop at nothing to intercept He Yingnong, highlighting the extreme importance of the “Northeast Theater National Defense Strategy Plan” that He Yingnong possessed. Amidst the chaos of the large retreat, Feng Boyuan also faced a dilemma. Should he continue with the task of assassinating He Yingnong or stay to accompany Mei Ruojin? He felt too much guilt towards Mei Ruojin, but at this moment, he was no longer in control of his own fate. His lack of freedom was entirely due to Mei Ruojin. Love was deep, but the pain was profound. Mei Ruojin was also experiencing violent turmoil within her heart. She hoped Feng Boyuan would stay, but if he did, the outcome could only be death. To make Feng Boyuan leave, Mei Ruojin had no choice but to repeatedly hurt him, refuse him, and force him to leave Pingxi, far away from this chaos. Deep in Mei Ruojin's heart lay a bigger secret: Feng Boyuan's younger brother, Liang Zhiyuan, was now the deputy director of the social department of the Military Management Committee, Sun Du.
