In the late 1930s, it was a particularly difficult time during the Japanese invasion of China. Tianjin, as an established trading port, was a dangerous place where various forces converged and competed. From a poor background, Xiong Kuohai (played by Zhang Jiayi) appears to be an ordinary employee at a foreign trading firm, but in reality, he is an underground party member of the Special Section of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, a secret identity even his supportive wife, Zhou Shuzhen (played by Yan Bingyan), is unaware of. However, he is living a very frugal life; when the trading firm’s owner flees with the funds, Xiong suddenly loses his source of income. He must find a way to make a living while continuing his underground activities. Meanwhile, his superior, Lao Gu, is betrayed and brutally murdered by the Japanese military police commander, Kato Keiji, in Tianjin. To combat the arrogance of the Japanese military, the Communist Party decides to carry out an assassination operation against Kato. The atmosphere in Tianjin becomes tense and ominous... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name, "Borrowing a Gun," by writer Long Yi and produced by the same team behind "Latent."
