In the town of Lanqiaobu, Aotu Mountain area, villager Jiang Daya (Zhang Fengyi) encounters a bombing by the Japanese army on his way to his wedding. Only he, the bride Han Chunyun (Li Lin), fellow villager Chen Mohan (Sun Song), and Zhu Yudao (Lin Yongjian) miraculously survive. When it comes to life choices, Jiang Daya and Zhu Yudao want to join the Kuomintang, but end up in the New Fourth Army; meanwhile, Chen Mohan and Han Chunyun want to join the New Fourth Army, but are captured by the Kuomintang. Their fates change from then on: under the cultivation of Commander Yang Tinghui (Li Xuejian), Jiang Daya grows into a New Fourth Army leader, but his bad habits attract criticism from some comrades: Zhang Puqing believes he lacks ideological awareness, and Dou Yuquan thinks he is inexperienced. Jiang Gubei (Yu Hewei) holds a grudge against him for pursuing the propaganda officer Dongfang Wenyin (Yin Tao), which brings Jiang Daya many hardships. At the same time, Chen Mohan and Han Chunyun find their respective positions within the Kuomintang army. Once fellow villagers, they become enemies and friends as circumstances change... This film portrays the life experiences of the protagonists spanning over forty years from the War of Resistance to the Cultural Revolution. This film is adapted from Xu Guixiang's novel of the same name, which won the 6th "Mao Dun Literature Prize."
