The story takes place in the late 1970s. The Red Star Machinery Plant is a state-owned enterprise, and Jin Yong (played by Jiang Wu) is recognized as a technical expert and a capable producer. He works in the workshop with his best friend Du Zhiming (played by Wang Zhifei), his apprentice Lin Yue (played by Zhao Qian), tools keeper Feng Xinliu (played by Liang Xin), and office clerk Kong Lingqin (played by Wang Lan).
