During the late Qing Dynasty, in Nanxun, the silk merchant Hong Fuqi, one of the "Eight Cows," had his children gathered around him. Although his first wife passed away early, he was fortunate to marry a gentle and virtuous concubine who managed a boat restaurant, with the golden plaque "Hong Fuqi Tian" hanging prominently at their door. However, beneath the facade of a harmonious family lay hidden dangers; the son born out of wedlock, Hong Wenlu, brought by the concubine was not his biological child, and Fuqi naturally regarded him differently. Wenlu, feeling insecure and malicious, always wished to outshine others and secretly set traps.
Hong's eldest son, Wenguang, participated in the revolutionary party, and Wenlu secretly reported him to the authorities, resulting in disaster for Wenguang and entangling the whole family. Meanwhile, Hong's daughter Wenwei fell in love with the servant Jin Bao and became pregnant; Wenlu pretended to be a good person to help Wenwei elope with Jin Bao, seizing the opportunity to remove the last obstacle to his plan to usurp the family fortune. Then, Wenlu took matters into his own hands and murdered Fuqi, who had sought refuge elsewhere, claiming all of the Hong family's assets. Wenlu's mother, witnessing the brutal scene, was driven to madness. Wenwei and Jin Bao became separated during their escape, and upon returning to Nanxun, she found her family had been shattered. Misunderstanding that her lover Jin Bao had conspired against her, she contemplated suicide by drowning but was saved by a fisherman, Peng Hai. In gratitude, she married him and had a son, thus becoming a poor boatwoman after being a wealthy daughter's life. However, Wenlu discovered Wenwei was still alive and sought to eliminate her once and for all. To protect Wenwei and her son, Peng Hai sacrificed his own life.
Fast forward to the early years of the Republic, Hong Wenlu had transformed into Xu Tianlu, a wealthy businessman in Jinling. Jin Bao, back from studying in the US, helped the "only heir of the Hong family," Tianlu, manage his businesses. At this time, Wenwei also arrived in Nanjing with her second son, struggling to run a boat restaurant, seeking only a stable life and missing her early love many times. The famous actress Bai Qianru had already become Tianlu's concubine, and although Wenguang had survived his ordeal, working in the officialdom, he could only sigh helplessly when facing his past love. In the ever-changing world, grudges were inevitably repaid. Wenwei's son, Peng Jiayang, encountered an enemy of his family, Tianlu’s daughter Dayong. Dayong fell in love with Jiayang, while Jiayang had another girlfriend, Sha Hong…
Everything unraveled due to the chance encounter between Wenwei and the mad concubine. Faced with Tianlu's renewed rampage, the intolerable Wenwei, seeking revenge for blood debts, decided to sacrifice her son’s happiness, marrying the enemy's daughter Dayong to make Tianlu suffer without resistance. However, the innocent and kind Dayong was ultimately consumed by the flames of revenge. In the face of Dayong’s death, Tianlu completely collapsed, while Wenwei also realized that the cycle of retaliation could not end, that revenge could not solve everything, and only love could dissolve hatred, and only forgiveness could dilute grievances...
