Middle-aged Yu Dahai (played by Zhang Guoli) has gone through a life of setbacks, seemingly never encountering any good fortune. Once a truck driver for a state-owned factory, after the factory closed down, he drove a taxi to earn a meager living, working from dawn to dusk. His wife, Zhu Meilian (played by Deng Jie), could no longer tolerate his dull temperament and left him. After their parents passed away, Dahai single-handedly took care of his two younger brothers.
