The film tells the story of the Zhou sisters, Xu Yanxiang (played by Yuan Mei) and Zhou Biying (played by Zhang Qing). Separated since childhood, the sisters have led completely different lives. Xu Yanxiang ends up living a difficult life among the common people, while Zhou Biying becomes a famous movie star after receiving an education abroad. Each sister possesses a piece of jade pendant that can be combined to form a complete pattern. The Zhou family has a very loyal butler who has served them for many years. The second Madame of the Zhou family is Zhou Biying's biological mother, who falsely accuses the first Madame and the butler of having an affair to compete for the inheritance, claiming Xu Yanxiang is an illegitimate child. Mr. Zhou falls for the trap and writes a will leaving all his property to the second Madame, while expelling the butler, the oldest daughter, and the first Madame. The second Madame then plots to kill Mr. Zhou with her lover, but just before he dies, Mr. Zhou modifies the will, rendering the previous will invalid and leaving the inheritance to his two daughters. To access the inheritance, they must piece the two jade pendants together.
