After their father's death in a car accident, their mother and her five daughters—Hongmei, Honglan, Hongzhu, Hongju, and Wimei—are living in a cramped place called "Fukangli" by the Nanjiang River. The mother doted on Wimei, planning to live with her in the old house, hoping Wimei would take care of her in her old age. This arrangement caused dissatisfaction among the four older sisters, as it meant they could not spend their twilight years with their mother. The tension within this family manifests between the sisters, and the house becomes a knot in their hearts.
