In December 1936, the shocking Xi'an Incident broke out, prompting a series of agreements between the Nationalists and the Communists to force Chiang Kai-shek to resist Japan. Ran Hua (played by Li Zhuolin) was about to graduate from the Army Academy when his underground party identity was leaked by classmate Ning Pengfei (played by Xia Tian), leading to a strict investigation by the authorities. Ran's fiancée, Shi Li (played by Zhang Wenqi), and her family were implicated, and Ran's younger brother, Ran Guo (played by Huang Wei), had no place to hide and had to turn to banditry.
