The story takes place in the late Qing Dynasty, during a devastating plague along the Huai River. Lord Long and his sworn brother, Scholar Fang, go to the epidemic area to provide aid, only to discover that this epidemic is man-made. The culprit is Lord Long's brother (played by Li Zixiong), who is having an affair with the eldest lady (played by Chen Shali). The brother, disregarding family ties, teams up with the eldest lady to kill his own sibling and frame Scholar Fang. During her escape, Madam Fang mistakenly holds Lord Long's illegitimate child. Years later, a descendant of the Long family is adopted by the Guan family and named Houpu (played by Zhong Hanliang).
