The story takes place in the early years of the Republic of China, in the North Market of Old Shenyang, which is a lively place similar to the Tiānjiāo in Old Beijing, full of wandering folks, business people, foreign traders, adventurers, and speculators, creating a bustling atmosphere.
One day, an unremarkable small figure arrived at the North Market, unexpectedly causing a huge stir.
This person is named Zhao Chun'an, a small-time wanderer who had been searching for his younger sister, Liu'er, with whom he had lost contact twelve years ago. For many years, he felt guilty and was determined to find her, nearly traversing all of Northeast China. Occasionally, he found a page of an advertisement, identifying a beautiful woman in it by a beauty mark on her chin, and believed she was his sister. Thus, he journeyed in search of her, eventually learning that the woman was actually a member of a theatrical troupe named Xiao Furong, who had married the top figure in the North Market, Habele. Zhao Chun'an hastily rushed to the Habele Mansion.
Unbeknownst to Zhao Chun'an, at that moment, Habele was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan—his trusted servant, Xiao Dunzi, had returned from the capital with a secret message: Empress Longyu, wishing to obtain an ancestral treasure map passed down from Habele's family, had dispatched a special envoy disguised as a blind man to secretly infiltrate the city of Fengtian. Habele had always strictly adhered to his ancestors' teachings, protecting the treasure map, and upon hearing that the Empress had sent someone to retrieve it, he became nervous and immediately ordered to find that blind envoy. Coincidentally, on the very day Zhao Chun'an entered the North Market, he stumbled upon a tremendous secret—Police Chief Du Zhenhai was colluding with a thief named Fan Si. To outsmart Du Zhenhai, Zhao Chun'an had to pretend to be blind in order to escape. Meanwhile, Habele mistook Zhao Chun'an for the Empress’s secret envoy. The more Zhao Chun'an insisted he was not an envoy, the more Habele believed he was, treating him like an honored guest and welcoming him into the Habele Mansion. To find his sister, Zhao Chun'an had no choice but to go along with the misunderstanding.
However, Zhao Chun'an quickly realized that Habele's newly married fourth concubine was not his sister. He left the Habele Mansion. During this time, he met a beautiful female boss named Ye Lisha at a roast duck shop in the North Market. Ye Lisha was a mixed-race woman, widowed for many years, straightforward and capable, but very kind-hearted. She recognized that Zhao Chun'an resembled her deceased husband, and seeing him share his food with a group of little beggars confirmed to her that he was a good person, so she was very willing to help him.
There was also another person who was very enthusiastic about Zhao Chun'an—Zong Er, a performer working in the various entertainment spots. Zong Er was a man who loved to boast but was very timid. He had been in love with a maid named Zao Hua from the Habele Mansion for a long time. Zhao Chun'an and Zong Er got acquainted through a series of misunderstandings; Zong Er thought Zhao Chun'an was truly the envoy and followed him closely with his apprentice.
However, the local bully, Hao Laoda, began to doubt Zhao Chun'an's identity, and one of his men, Liu Er, recognized Zhao Chun'an as someone from his hometown. They reported him to Du Zhenhai, but Du Zhenhai remained convinced of Zhao Chun'an’s status as an envoy.
Habele also discovered that Zhao Chun'an was a fraud, but he was surprised to learn that he was actually a descendant of the one-armed guard Zhao Meng. When the old prince passed down the treasure map to the next generation, to prevent leaks, he passed the treasure-seeking mantra to the one-armed guard Zhao Meng. To obtain the treasure-seeking mantra, Habele became even closer to Zhao Chun'an.
The true identity of Liu Yiyuan, the owner of the Sanqing Troupe at the North Market, was a Japanese spy, and his secret mission was to find the Qing Dynasty dragon vein treasure. The only way to locate this treasure was to obtain the treasure map from Habele. Thus, he sent his female apprentice, Xiang Ling, to intentionally approach Zhao Chun'an. Because Liu Yiyuan had made Xiang Ling undergo surgery to create a fake birthmark for her, Zhao Chun'an gradually began to believe that his long-lost sister was Xiang Ling.
Unexpectedly, the real envoy sent by the Empress encountered a military coup on the journey and, after considerable hardships, arrived in Fengtian, but was captured as a fake by Habele and Du Zhenhai. Zhao Chun'an, feeling compassionate for the real envoy in distress, rescued him from prison. Holding a pardon letter written by the envoy, he thought he was safe, but little did he know that the envoy had colluded with Duan Dujun of Fengtian, leading to Zhao Chun'an and Habele being imprisoned again. In jail, however, Habele found his long-lost son, Guan Bo, who had been kidnapped during the Japanese "Dragon Mouth Operation." Since he had joined the Young Progressives Society of Fengtian as a revolutionary, he had always refused to acknowledge Habele as his father.
Zhao Chun'an and Habele became comrades in hardship in prison. It turned out that the revolutionaries in Fengtian were also watching over the safety of the Qing Dynasty’s dragon vein treasure. They established a secret base at the Shiyi Hall in the North Market. With the help of the Du siblings, Du Zhong and Du Meng, Guan Bo, Habele, Zhao Chun'an, and the thief Fan Si managed to escape, unaware that they had fallen into the trap of the cunning envoy. During this time, Ye Lisha, Xiang Ling, and others related to the Habele Mansion attempted to rescue Habele and Zhao Chun'an from prison, but all failed. Because Habele possessed the treasure map and Zhao Chun'an held the treasure-seeking mantra, the envoy opted not to kill them but sought ways to make them yield in order to obtain the treasure map's mantra. However, both remained resolute and refused to submit, prompting the envoy to decide to kill them.
Just as Zhao Chun'an and his group were being taken to the execution ground, the Northeast 28th Division led by Zhao Delin entered Fengtian, driving away Duan Dujun. Habele and Zhao Chun'an were therefore pardoned due to lack of evidence.
After their release, Liu Yiyuan urged Xiang Ling to take action. Zhao Chun'an truly regarded Xiang Ling as his sister. The clever Ye Lisha, however, noticed the inconsistencies and helped Zhao Chun'an see through Xiang Ling's identity. Yet Zhao Chun'an believed Xiang Ling was forced into her situation and treated her like a sister. His genuine love gradually moved Xiang Ling, and at the same time, she began to be attracted to Guan Bo.
Police Chief Du Zhenhai was also scheming for the treasure; he utilized his wife, Xiao Yuegui, who was a close sister of Habele's fourth concubine, to uncover the general truth. Thus, he colluded with Hao Laoda and employed the North Market's underworld forces to secretly steal the treasure map. Meanwhile, in addition to the hidden Liu Yiyuan, there were Japanese businessmen such as Sato and Kawai, dispatched from the Kwantung Army, who recklessly seized the drawings with the power of the Kwantung Army in Northeast China. At the same time, the just forces led by Guan Bo and the Du siblings from Shiyi Hall united with Zhao Chun'an, Habele, and Ye Lisha to form a team dedicated to protecting the national treasure. Three powers openly competed and engaged in a series of dramas…
Ultimately, Xiang Ling was won over to Zhao Chun'an's side, but by then, she had fallen deeply in love with Guan Bo. It was only then that she discovered: she was not Japanese at all, and Liu Yiyuan was not her uncle; everything was a lie fabricated by Liu Yiyuan. Her biological parents were killed by Liu Yiyuan. Zhao Chun'an also learned from Xiang Ling that his long-sought sister had already been harmed in the "Dragon Mouth Plan" set by Liu Yiyuan. In an unfortunate turn of events, Xiang Ling was poisoned while trying to retrieve half of the treasure map from Liu Yiyuan and was in critical condition.
Liu Yiyuan and Kawai, smug with confidence, took the treasure map and the treasure-seeking mantra obtained from Zhao Chun'an into the deep mountains, but Du Zhenhai's men followed closely behind. Amidst the chaos, Habele and his son Guan Bo led a temporarily organized force to intercept the Japanese Kwantung Army’s cavalry, while Zhao Chun'an and Ye Lisha led another group directly to the treasure pit, engaging in a final life-and-death battle with Liu Yiyuan to prevent the national treasure from falling into Japanese hands…
