The nanny, Damao, and the security guard, Guoliang, in a high-end residential community caused a huge uproar when they helped the young nanny, Ermei, escape her arranged marriage on the wedding day of the middle-aged security guard, Dading. The bride disappeared thereafter. Dading, furious after losing both his wife and money, demanded that Damao hand over Ermei. After being refused, he vowed not to let Damao and Guoliang have a single calm day. Although he appeared rough, he was cunning and cruel in his schemes. First, he accused Damao and Ermei of defrauding him of his money and possessions. Then, he planned to steal a resident's valuable dog and frame Damao, claiming it was purchased by Damao and Guoliang. The fabricated "evidence" was convincing enough that the police got involved, leading to Damao, previously lauded as a model nanny, suffering a tarnished reputation and falling into distress. However, Damao was principled and bravely faced the situation to protect her fellow nannies. The kind-hearted Guoliang, on the other hand, began to behave differently, as though he owed Dading an unpayable debt, enduring mistreatment while maintaining a facade of friendliness.
Damao deeply loved Guoliang and expressed her feelings multiple times. Guoliang loved her too but was afraid to accept her love, not simply because she had a nine-year-old daughter, Nian Nian, but due to a dark secret of his own. When he was eight, he suffered severe brain injuries in a car accident that killed his parents and left him with lifelong complications, including frequent seizures that could lead to paralysis or death. He did not want to burden Damao. But facing Damao's sincere and affectionate feelings complicated his resolve; he, still young and craving love, was indecisive. When Dading kept making trouble, Guoliang helped Damao deal with the situation, even suffering from his ailments and being cared for by Damao. To express his love for Damao, Guoliang played a famous piece on the trumpet, “Romeo and Juliet,” wishing their love would be as steadfast as that of the classic characters. Damao responded that they wanted the love of Romeo and Juliet but not their tragic fate.
What Guoliang didn't expect was that the driver who killed his parents in the car accident, Le Jingyuan, lived in the same community. A wealthy private entrepreneur, after fleeing the scene of the accident, had faced tragedy upon tragedy; his wife died, his daughter Le Lichuan was deceived and ended a failed marriage, and his son Le Xiushan fell into mental illness after the death of his lover. Le Jingyuan viewed this as divine punishment and wanted to secretly help Guoliang change his dire living circumstances and find his long-lost brother as a means of seeking redemption. When Le Lichuan had an accident and was saved by Guoliang at the cost of his own safety, Le Jingyuan's desire for redemption intensified, offering Guoliang half of his company. He arranged for Guoliang to improve his upbringing and education first, then bring him into the company as an executive. However, Guoliang was confused, thinking that the Le family was grateful for his life-saving help, and reluctantly played along. He even encouraged his daughter Le Lichuan to love Guoliang, all part of Le Jingyuan’s atonement. During her observations of Guoliang, Le Lichuan found him to be kind and sincere, and she truly fell in love with him.
Meanwhile, Damao found herself in trouble as her half-sister, Hao Ping, portrayed by Dading, came to her seeking refuge from an arranged marriage set by their mother. Growing up under cruel treatment from her stepmother, Damao had fled her hometown and despised her family, rejecting the idea of accepting her sister, Mingmei. Damao worked as a nanny for the retired doctor, Xie Xisheng, who treated her like a daughter. Kindly, Dr. Xie took in Mingmei when he saw her alone and vulnerable in the city. Upon meeting Damao's daughter, Nian Nian, Mingmei immediately recalled the incident from nine years earlier when their neighbor, Shen Kairong, abandoned a baby, realizing Nian Nian was the child Damao had rescued. This shocked Damao, as she had raised Nian Nian for nine years and feared losing her or that Nian Nian would learn she was not her biological mother, thus firmly preventing Mingmei from staying in the community.
However, Mingmei's sincerity and affection for her sister moved Damao, and she introduced her to Le Jingyuan's household to care for Xie Xiushan. When Xie Xiushan's health was stable, he was gentle and understanding, forming a deep friendship with Mingmei. Alas, their parents pressed her to return home to marry Shen Kairong, the village chief's son. Damao, Guoliang, and Xie Xiushan conspired to protect her. Damao's cruel stepmother harbored an even deeper hatred for Damao, and Dading conspired with her to have Shen Kairong claim Nian Nian, forcing Damao to yield Mingmei. Just as one crisis passed, another arose—Dr. Xie diagnosed Guoliang, suspecting he could only live for a year, pushing Damao into desperation. Damao endured immense pain, working night shifts to earn money for Guoliang's medication.
Feeling deeply regretful for dragging Damao into his troubles, Guoliang decided to break up with her. Coincidentally, Dr. Xie's student, Zhang Zhongxing, who had previously dated Damao and now practiced medicine in another city, sought to rekindle their romance and proposed. Guoliang tried to facilitate a relationship between Damao and Zhang. He followed the arrangements from the Xie family, resigning from his security job to join Xie's company. Le Lichuan, who deeply loved Guoliang, decided to marry him, but Guoliang often remained noncommittal. Consequently, Le Lichuan devised a plan to have the drunken Guobao nanny and security Liangg feel as though they had an intimate relationship. The next day, Damao unexpectedly found lipstick on Guoliang’s face and assumed he had been unfaithful, causing her immense pain and determination to leave him.
Damao was continuously searching for the missing Ermei and finally discovered her whereabouts—Ermei had been deceived by someone from her hometown into a sex trafficking ring and lost her freedom. Damao, undeterred by the dangers, rallied a group to rescue Ermei, which endeared her to Dading, who agreed to follow Damao's advice to win Ermei over with genuine feelings.
Encouraged by their mother, Mingmei, Shen Kairong returned to Lanjiang City to steal Nian Nian once more, offering Damao a choice: either surrender Mingmei or lose Nian Nian. Damao was at a loss.
Mingmei, for the sake of her sister and Nian Nian, secretly returned home to marry Shen Kairong. Damao, Guoliang, Xie Xiushan, and Dading rushed to the rural home, intervening at the last moment before Mingmei was to register her marriage with Shen Kairong and preventing the arranged marriage. Shen Kairong rallied a group to try to stop Damao from taking Mingmei back to Lanjiang City, but at a critical moment, the resourceful Guoliang had already called the police. With judicial intervention, the local bully Shen Kairong had no choice but to watch Damao leave with Mingmei.
Damao planned to take Le Lichuan, her sister, and daughter to Zhang Zhongxing's hometown. Meanwhile, Guoliang was severely injured while fighting off thugs to protect the community’s residents and was in critical condition, prompting Damao to stay behind to care for him.
Later, Dr. Xie invited a world-renowned neurosurgeon to perform surgery on Guoliang, saving his life and curing his brain condition. Damao won a legal case against Shen Kairong, proving Nian Nian was not his daughter, leading to Shen Kairong facing legal action for hiring child labor.
Finally, Guoliang managed to track down the hit-and-run driver he had sought for over twenty years—the suspect was Le Jingyuan. After twenty years of living in remorse and pain, Le Jingyuan, following his final apology to Guoliang, felt the heavy shadow over his spirit dissipate and turned himself in.
Throughout, Guoliang, who had always loved Damao, played the love song “Romeo and Juliet” on the trumpet for her. Hearing his trumpet, Damao rushed downstairs and danced in the rain with Guoliang, marking the most romantic moment of their lives. Meanwhile, filled with regret and deep feelings, Le Lichuan refused to give up on Guoliang; she could not lose to a nanny, so she approached Guoliang and Damao with a passport, plane ticket, and admission letter for him to study abroad. Le Lichuan said, “Playing the trumpet was your lifelong dream, right? The admission letter from the U.S. has arrived, and the ticket is booked. You choose.”
Guoliang was stunned. On one side was the simple and lovely Damao, and on the other was Le Lichuan, who could help him realize his dreams. What would Guoliang choose?
