In the fourth year of the Republic of China, Yuan Shikai attempted to become emperor, leading to political turmoil. In the autumn of that year, a massive fire broke out in Wusong Town, displacing tens of thousands of victims. The already chaotic Wusong Town became even more unstable. In the wake of local fundraising efforts for relief, the town began to rebuild homes. However, during the construction of a certain residence, an unexpected incident occurred, revealing the corpse of a man in a strange state. This sparked various rumors among the townsfolk, leading to panic. They raised funds to invite monks and Taoists for exorcism and ancestral rites, during which some wandering sorcerers also meddled, creating an atmosphere of confusion in the town. The leader of the town's defense team, Lu Yuering, who came from a military background, was highly skeptical of supernatural claims. Observing the situation, he grew furious and ordered the expulsion of the monks and sorcerers while also sending for the local coroner, Wu Yungen, and his apprentice, Liu Guiyuan, demanding that they examine the corpse to ascertain the cause of death and clarify the situation. The impoverished gentry's son, Shi Lezhi, who had traveled extensively, rushed to the scene upon hearing about the case. Noticing Lu Xiangyi was present, he sought to make an impression and critiqued the two coroner's apprentices, displaying considerable disdain. Wu Yungen, unfazed, focused on examining the strange green sprouts on the deceased, appearing quite shocked, and subsequently made excuses suggesting there might be hidden truths, speaking in vague terms.
