In an ancient town, embroidery girl Ah Hui and her childhood friend, carpenter Ah Ping, were inseparable. However, their lives took a tragic turn when Zhao Jingchong, the young master from Ah Hui's father's family, returned from his studies and unexpectedly set his sights on her. Zhao Jingchong, dissatisfied with his family’s restrictions, had a fallout with the landlord family and established his own household, but soon met with numerous setbacks and died in a car accident. When Ah Hui was labeled as the so-called "toxic backflow water" by local customs, Ah Ping resolved to marry her. Unfortunately, the clan leader of the Yang family in the ancient town, claiming to uphold the honor of the family name, used his power to hinder their union, forcing Ah Hui to marry Xu Lianggen, a dockworker. Tragically, Xu's mother and son soon died in the fires of the Japanese invasion, leaving Ah Hui heartbroken. In remembrance of their kindness, she decided to adopt a son. The adopted plasterer, Feng Ada, was imprisoned after a building he contracted collapsed and injured people. Through Ah Hui's relentless efforts, he was released but abandoned his wife and children without a word. Despite a series of blows in her life, Ah Hui remained resilient, independently raising her two children while struggling to make ends meet. After the liberation, Ah Ping, who had been wrongly reported dead in the military, returned to his hometown and became a leading figure. He remained unwavering in his desire to marry Ah Hui. However, first she was reluctant to involve him, then Feng Ada suddenly returned, and a female college student’s genuine admiration for Ah Ping further complicated matters, leading to numerous misadventures. Just when the two deeply in love were finally about to build a nest of love in the ancient town after enduring hardships, Ah Hui fell ill from overwork and collapsed at the finish line of their long marathon of love, leaving behind countless regrets in life. Years later, a grey-haired Ah Ping, with Ah Hui’s descendants, flew kites in the brilliant rapeseed flowers, reminiscent of the beloved yet tragic grandmother and mother of their bygone days…
