In the deep winter of 1969, a beautiful young girl named Bai Yulan came to the Beidahuang farm from Beijing, accompanied by her lover Zheng Fenghua and classmates Li Jin and Zhang Xianghong. On this snowstorm-filled day, over two hundred young intellectuals poured into the Third Company from Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Harbin. That night, these young men and women had to cram into a large dormitory, separated by a curtain, and thus began their life as young intellectuals. Bai Yulan was a graceful and gentle beauty, quickly catching the eye of Wang Mingming, the son of the company commander Wang Daleng. Wang Mingming was impulsive and daring, persistently harassing Bai Yulan, which upset Zheng Fenghua and others. Li Jin wanted to teach Wang Mingming a lesson but was knocked down by him. Wang Mingming openly declared his interest in Bai Yulan, claiming that it was possible for a young man from Beidahuang to love a girl from a big city. However, Bai Yulan was devoted to Zheng Fenghua and paid no heed to Wang Mingming’s nonsense. Zhang Xianghong was a politically ambitious youth who proposed the "two-five" slogan: no dating for two years, no marriage for five years, focusing entirely on rooting in the frontier. Director Wang of the farm enforced this as a regulation for the young intellectuals. Under pressure, Zheng Fenghua dared not openly associate with Bai Yulan, while Wang Mingming became increasingly aggressive in his pursuit of her, leaving Bai Yulan in distress. Li Jin fell in love with a girl from Shanghai named Zhu Amei, while Zhang Xianghong was hesitant to accept Yang Lili's fiery affection. To change her living conditions, Yang Lili submitted to Director Wang. The female intellectual Qinzi went mad under political pressure but found love with the rightist Qian Guanghua, leading them to secretly marry. The lives of young intellectuals who paid the price for the two-five regulations were highlighted by Dajiang and Wang Pingjie, who were swallowed by a blizzard during their date. In a snowfield, the crazed Wang Mingming raped Bai Yulan and was sentenced to ten years in prison. Bai Yulan, however, faced the agony of attempted suicide, pregnancy, and childbirth, enduring the suffering of being an unmarried mother. When her child was born, the Wang family wanted the child back, but Bai Yulan would rather give her son away than return him to the Wang family. When Bai Yulan was tormented and in desperate need of comfort, Zheng Fenghua retreated, leading to a fierce fight between him and Li Jin. Once friends turned into foes. In a political deal with Director Wang, Zhang Xianghong married Yang Lili and ascended to the position of deputy director. When the Third Company hosted a collective wedding for the young intellectuals, Zhu Amei was suddenly bitten to death by a wolf, plunging the festive atmosphere to freezing point. Li Jin, grieving the loss of his wife, faced additional misfortune when he was imprisoned due to a song he composed years ago titled "My Beidahuang." Four years later, after being exonerated, Li Jin found himself face to face with the newly released Wang Mingming. When Li Jin returned to the Third Company, people were scrambling to return to the city. The lovebirds built by the storm of returning to the city fell apart, and happy families disintegrated. Bai Yulan remained single, carrying the burden of the Beidahuang, while the squadron yard was filled with the offspring of young intellectuals from Second, Third, and even Twenty-Seventh Regions. Time failed to heal the rift between Zheng Fenghua and Bai Yulan as they both busily prepared for entrance exams to return to the city. Wang Daleng resumed his role as company commander, while a large number of workers flooded into the company, and the young intellectuals returned to that same dormitory, with another curtain hung in the middle... Life was astonishingly similar to a fable. On a snowy day, they left. Wang Daleng's family came to see Beidahuang. Bai Yulan, on the verge of leaving, refused to forgive Wang Mingming for the harm he caused her and rejected the Wang family's request to see Beidahuang. Li Jin, acting on his own, handed Beidahuang over to Wang Daleng's wife, Dingxiang, which angered Bai Yulan, who looked at Li Jin with fury, and he held her tightly in his embrace...
