The story takes place in the late Qing Dynasty. Lan Yan (played by An Yixuan) harbors resentment against her father for marrying a new wife, Yu Nu (played by Zhao Ziqi), which leads to a persistent emotional struggle. The servant, Leng Yun (played by He Shengming), patiently comforts and guides Lan Yan. Despite Yu Nu moving into the family, Lan Yan refuses to call her "mother," which deeply frustrates Yu Nu. In public, Yu Nu appears to be a gentle and virtuous woman, but privately, she is ruthless towards Lan Yan. She threatens Lan Yan not to tell their father, or else the family will be ruined. In an unfortunate accident, Yu Nu's father dies, worsening Lan Yan's situation. The heartless Yu Nu plans to sell Lan Yan to a brothel, but she is saved by Leng Yun, sparing her from a fate of degradation.
