The story takes place during the Ming Dynasty, where the Empress is favored by the Emperor and gives birth to a dragon heir. Grand Tutor Pang Fei (played by Huang Daliang) fears that his sister, the Concubine, will lose favor and devises a plan to replace the crown prince, leading to the Empress being sent to the cold palace and the crown prince disappearing. Decades later, during the imperial examination, Liu Sheng (played by Lu Songxian), the adopted son of Liu Jing (played by He Guilin), who was set to be the top scholar, is replaced by Yuan Dan (played by He Baosheng), the adopted son of Pang Fei, leaving Liu Sheng feeling very indignant. Later, Liu Sheng encounters a young woman named Duan Yu (played by Jiang Qinqin), and through a series of misunderstandings, they develop feelings for each other. Soon after, Duan Yu's father is framed and imprisoned while escorting a luminous pearl, prompting her to disguise herself as a man to infiltrate the government in order to uncover the truth behind the incident. Within the government, Duan Yu reunites with Liu Sheng, yet he fails to recognize that the youthful figure before him is his beloved.
