In 305 BC, the longest-reigning monarch in the history of the Qin state, King Zhao of Qin, Ying Ji, ascended to the throne. Over the following fifty-six years, under the guidance of his mother, Empress Dowager Xuan, and his uncle Wei Ran, King Ying Ji transformed from a tender young ruler into a resolute and composed true king who commanded respect across the world; meanwhile, the Qin state dramatically rose from a relatively second-rate power to a superpower that overshadowed other nations. With the assistance of Empress Dowager Xuan, strategist Fan Ku, and the "War God" Bai Qi, Ying Ji implemented national strategies of "forceful engagements and profitable alliances” and “distant diplomacy while attacking nearby enemies,” leading the Qin people to conquer the Yiqu, repair the Great Wall, severely damage the Qi state, capture the capital of the Chu state, and force the Wei and Han states into submission through extremely brutal battles. The Battle of Changping dealt a devastating blow to the Zhao state, the last remaining great enemy, ultimately leading to the annihilation of the Western Zhou and the acquisition of the Nine Tripods! From then on, no one could rival Qin's dominance in the Central Plains, setting the stage for Ying Zheng's unification of China eighty-six years later.
