In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, the wealthy Tian family in Qixian, Shanxi. The gambling addict Tian Yaozu (played by Hou Tianlai) unexpectedly loses the entire family fortune and his wife, Shuzhen (played by Wang Jing), during the celebration for his son Tian Qing’s 'zhuazhou' ceremony. Shuzhen is fortunately rescued by revolutionary Xu Mucraft (played by Chuzhibo), escaping from being violated. As Xu Mucraft engages in revolutionary activities, he helps Shuzhen and her son through their difficult days, which inspires Tian Qing to aspire to revitalize the family business from a young age. One day, during a severe drought, the grown-up Tian Qing (played by Du Chun) decides to embark on the path of "Walking to the West Exit" with his brother-in-law Liang Mantun (played by Fu Dalong). On their journey, they are unexpectedly kidnapped by the bandit Liu Yidao (played by Du Zhiguo), who makes Tian Qing the third leader in order to win him over, and gives him the meat ticket Douhua (played by Miao Pu) as his wife. After going through numerous setbacks, Tian Qing finally finds a business path of his own in the desert. However, years of warlord chaos lead to social unrest, and Tian Qing goes bankrupt. At this moment, he deeply realizes that only national prosperity can ensure public peace. Thus, Tian Qing joins the Daqingshan Guerrilla Team and embarks once again on the journey to "Walking to the West Exit."
