After a long decade of turmoil, the suffering people of the nation finally welcome the breath of spring. A whole generation of youth has buried their glorious青春 in movements and re-education in rural areas, missing the great opportunity to study and learn in the classroom. Fortunately, the news of the restoration of the college entrance examination gives aspiring youths hope. Among this army preparing for the exam is Lin Mu (played by Luo Gang), a sent-down youth who came from Beijing to the remote village of Xiaoxi. Previously, he had a daughter with a local girl, Wang Xiaomai (played by Wang Qianhua). After dedicated studying, he finally gained admission to a university in Beijing, but troubles soon followed. Lin Mu’s mother, Yang Wencai (played by Wang Liyun), arrives at Xiaoxi Village. She is proud and refuses to acknowledge this rural daughter-in-law. In order to break up the couple, Yang tries to prevent Xiaomai from going to Beijing and forges a divorce document, going to great lengths.
