This story tells of Zhou Wanshun (played by Li Liqun), who, during the early 1980s at the onset of China's reform and opening-up, resolutely decides to send his only 13-year-old daughter Zhou Ayu (played by Yin Tao) to Italy alone while he sells their ancestral home and all their possessions. He, along with his wife Zhao Yinhua (played by Chi Peng) and son Zhou Maigou (played by Zhang Yi), leaves home and walks to Wenzhou. After arriving in Wenzhou, Zhou Wanshun starts from collecting rubbish and gradually transforms into a successful businessman. The reputation-conscious and rebellious Zhou Maigou, in a fit of shame and anger to escape his father, runs away to the Northwest to start his own difficult journey of entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, in Italy, Zhou Ayu overcomes numerous challenges, beginning as a dishwasher, and, with her outstanding business acumen, successfully establishes her own business in Prato, Italy.
